A Department of Public Safety official confirmed a trooper shot a man after a physical altercation outside Paris Regional Medical Center on Monday night.

Department of Public Safety information officer Mark Tackett said the physical struggle happened after the safety officer tried to check the well-being of the man, who was sitting on a concrete barrier near the hospital.

The trooper “was injured to the point he feared for his life,” Tackett said, and shot the man.

The safety patrol officer, stationed in Paris, received treatment for a dislocated shoulder at PRMC. As of 11 p.m., Tackett said he did not know if the trooper had been released from medical care.
