The Lamar County Homelessness Coalition hopes to shine a light on the local homelessness through a tasty summertime treat — popsicles.
On Aug. 3, the coalition will give away free popsicles at several places throughout Paris — including the Brookshires parking lot, the Paris Towne Center, the Splash Pad in downtown Paris, the Paris Farmers Market and various parks — in an effort to raise awareness of the issue, said coalition member Allan Hubbard.
“This is just to raise awareness, not money,” he said. “When we give the popsicles, we’ll give a card that has information about the homeless issue here and how they can get involved with the coalition.”
Hubbard said the coalition will be giving away popsicles from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
“Surprisingly, it’s still a relatively unknown issue,” Hubbard said. “Younger people like to say they’re ‘woke’ about issues today, but in my opinion it’s more important to be woke to local problems, where you can make a real difference, than to national issues where one person might not have as much of an impact, though of course it’s important to be aware of both.”
