Letters to the Editor
March 9, 2010

I would like to compliment the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints on Pine Mill Road on its beautiful expansion and beautification of the property and the area surrounding it.

It is with a troubled heart that I offer my sympathy for the agony they have had to endure when “a caller” reported the removal of two trees on the church property. Did that caller know the intent of future landscaping or the final result of the undergoing expansion?

I guess what really troubles me, in addition to the fines, legal fees, time and frustration that church was forced into while trying to improve the property, was an invasion of privacy and the right of freedom and discernment one hopes for in owning property.

Even in a wonderful small city like Paris, I many times fear we are resorting back to similarities of Russian rule (which was the Communist Party,) Socialism or Feudalism, not to be confused with Manorialism. This fear extends to our state and nation as well.

We might soon have to get a permit to utilize our own private bathrooms — an extreme analogy, I know. But applications and permits aren’t always for the protection of the land or homeowner, but often times money in the pockets of bureaucrats.

If the Paris City Council, Planning and Zoning Commission, Code Enforcement Agency, Department of Parks and Recreation and other city, state and federal agencies can’t focus on more pertinent and urgent matters than the removal of two trees, get out of your offices and off your cushioned chairs and talk to the citizens.

I think we could offer a good list of priorities.
