Chisum ISD is taking the lead in pre-kindergarten/kindergarten round-ups, starting Monday.

“It’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, so 4- and 5-year-olds,” Chisum secretary Lauren Aaron said.

Other school districts will be hosting their round-ups later in the month or next month. Lamar County Head Start will host sign-ups March 25 through April 26, while Givens Early Childhood Education Center will start April 8. Blossom Elementary School will host its round-up at 9 a.m. April 26. Deport Elementary and North Lamar ISD have not set a date for their round-ups. Deport secretary Shirlene Harrell said the school was looking at April 26 as well.

North Lamar ISD is revamping its pre-kindergarten program, looking to close the Head Start satellite classes at Aaron Parker Elementary School and to add full-time pre-kindergarten classes. Currently, Higgins Elementary School has half-day pre-kindergarten classes.

Most of the programs require the three things: the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card and shot records. Chisum’s program adds in a photo ID card of the parent/guardian. Givens also requires custody papers, if applicable; proof of residency; proof of income, which can include pay stubs, Social Security, disability, child support, etc.; parent or guardian driver’s license; and a military ID, if applicable.

Lamar County Head Start requires the same items as Givens, but expands family income verifications to include TANE proof or even a 2018 tax return or 2018 W-2 form, and adds in the child’s state Children’s Health Insurance Program eligibility, if applicable.

Head Start enrolls students 3 to 4 years old.
