Fresh from college in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Macon Atkinson joined The Paris News editorial staff Thursday.
“I’m excited to join the team at The Paris News because I see how committed they are to their community and to good journalism,” Atkinson said. “I’m looking forward to contributing what I’ve learned in North Carolina and continuing to improve my work so I can best serve the community here in Northeast Texas.”
Atkinson is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a May graduate of Appalachian State University, where she earned a degree in journalism with a minor in Spanish.
During her time at App State, she wrote for The Appalachian, the university’s newspaper, and was a member of the university’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. She interned at two weekly newspapers: the Watauga Democrat in Boone, North Carolina, and INDY Week in Durham, North Carolina, where she covered everything from arts and entertainment to immigration and local government.
“Throughout the interview process, Macon showed us she is sharp and inquisitive. She’s already expressed a deep desire to dive into the community to discover the type of in-depth stories that help readers understand what’s happening around them and why,” managing editor Klark Byrd said. “I look forward to Macon discovering and meeting the challenge provided in covering the Red River Valley.”
Atkins said the thing she enjoys about journalism is the opportunity to get to know a wide range of people and hear their stories.
“There’s never just a regular day in the office,” she said. “No two days of work are the same, and I love having opportunities to meet so many different people and constantly learn new things.”
While Atkinson is interested in political reporting, specifically on immigration, she said she wants to build a solid foundation covering a variety of beats for The Paris News, including breaking news, police and courts, housing and agriculture.
“I’m ready to learn and challenge myself as a new reporter, and I know this newsroom and this community are great places to do that,” Atkinson said.
When she’s not writing, Atkinson enjoys running, cooking and reading Spanish poetry.
