John Mark Francis

DEPORT — After two years, Mayor John Mark Francis still awaits his day in court.

A trial tentatively scheduled this week has been delayed because of witness unavailability, the Memorial Day holiday court schedule and priority given to a sexual assault case, according to Lamar County District Attorney Gary Young.

A Lamar County grand jury indicted Francis on a charge of theft of property between $2,500 and $30,000 in June 2017.

According to newspaper records, former Deport City Council member Tommy Borders asked for Francis’ resignation at a council meeting April 13, 2018. Francis refused, saying he did nothing wrong.

Accused of having a $2,500 La-Z-Boy recliner delivered to his house on the city’s dime, Francis said the furniture was delivered to his house because his address “is used as a backup address when no one is at City Hall to receive them.”
