ARGYLE — For the first time in school history, the No. 9-ranked Honey Grove Lady Warriors softball team punched its ticket to the regional finals. In order to advance to the next round, Honey Grove needed to take down Bosqueville in the regional semfinals, which it did by a final score of 8-2.
Honey Grove struck first on an RBI double from Bree Cason that plated younger sister Maddie Cason to make it 1-0 after the top of the first was over. However, Bosqueville responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame off an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.
After Bosqueville scored twice in the bottom of the first, Bree Cason and the Lady Warriors defense found its groove, not allowing Bosqueville to score again the rest of the way. However, Honey Grove’s bats needed to get going.
The Lady Warriors came back with a run in the top of the third after Tylar Lane’s RBI double drove Maddie Cason across home plate, and the score was tied 2-2.
Then in the top of the fifth, Honey Grove’s offense came to life.
Kelsee Frost led off the top of the fifth with a single and was plated by Maddie Cason, who delivered an RBI triple. Cason scored later in the inning to make it 4-2.
After Bree Cason shut down Bosqueville in the bottom of the fifth, Honey Grove put the game away in the next frame. The first two Lady Warrior batters drew walks and both scored on an RBI double from Maddie Cason. Makiyah Johnson’s RBI single pushed Cason across home plate and Johnson scored later on an RBI double from Lane. The score was 8-2, which ultimately held up as the final.
Honey Grove had to escape a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, but did so without allowing a run.
Bree Cason pitched all 7 innings for Honey Grove, giving up 2 earned runs, 5 hits and struck out 5 batters. She also added a double from the plate in the first inning.
Maddie Cason was a spark for her team offensively as she finished one home run away from the cycle. She went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, while Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored once. Lane added an RBI double that drove in 2 runs, while Maura O’Dea recorded a double. Kelsee Frost also chipped in with 1 hit and scored once.
Now, the Lady Warriors are on game away from the state tournament, which is something the teams is excited about.
The Lady Warriors softball team continues its postseason march with a best-of-three series against Crawford in the regional finals. The teams will begin Game 1 of the pivotal series at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Argyle High School.
