Catch alternative rock at Scatfest

Published May 26, 2009

Heading into its sixth year, the Scatfest Music Festival features eight local and regional bands on Saturday, May 30 at the Lamar County Fairgrounds in Paris.

Tickets are $5 to the all-ages event. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. with music starting at 4 p.m.

Headlining this year’s festival are Dallas alternative rock band, Don’t Wake Aislin and local Reggae group, Hostile Hippies. The rest of the lineup features an eclectic and diverse mix of bands, including Pearl Street Riot, The Vessel Fleet, The Tastydactyls, The Meek and Mighty, Ella Minnow and The Witz.

“From start to finish, this is a show you will not want to miss,” Joey Dean, organizer of the event, said.

Don’t Wake Aislin formed in 2004 and have since gone on to have success in Texas, including a recent spot on this year’s South by Southwest festival in Austin. In April, the band completed a nationwide tour with Tooth and Nail recording artist, The Wedding, and released a new EP “Everyone Has A Story...,” produced by Geoff Rockwell, whose credits include Forever The Sickest Kids and School Boy Humor.

“Don’t Wake Aislin is one of the top emerging bands in the Dallas-Fort Worth music scene,” Dean said. “To get an idea of their sound, I would compare them to a mix between Evanescence and Paramore.”

Featuring a strong influence from Cas Haley, local newcomers Hostile Hippies have gained a growing fan base both locally and nationally with their fresh take on reggae and ska. Band members include Preston Hall, Alex Addy and Antonio Wagnon.

“The aim of the festival is simple — to bring people together through a genuine love of music,” Dean said. “For six years, the festival has provided a fun and safe experience for Northeast Texas with up-and-coming bands from Texas and beyond. This year is no exception.”

Other acts scheduled to appear include:

Pearl Street Riot

Comprised of Paris roughnecks, Wesley Joe Malone (formerly of Miles from Nowhere), Cody Phifer (formerly of The Michael O’Neal Band), Cody Reger and Dakota Miller, Pearl Street Riot is a throwback to what made music great. Armed with rugged riffs, honest lyrics and solid musicianship, the band takes a bare, gritty approach to alternative-country that likens to Merle Haggard and Fred Eaglesmith, but with more of a punch.

The Vessel Fleet

The Vessel Fleet, of Bogata, brings forth a dynamic exploration of sound and melody. The band suggests the psychedelic prowess of a Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, while making it uniquely their own and relevant for this day and age. Band members include Daniel Watts, Christopher Watts, Patrick Senn and Todd Ross.

The Tastydactyls

In just three years, Waco-based The Tastydactyls have become synonymous with the high energy, indie dance rock. Their infectious melodies, danceable beats, and whimsical lyrics — a blend of alternative rock and ‘80s synth pop — are rapidly gaining attention in the Texas music scene. The Tastydactyls are signed to Runt Entertainment, the artist development firm that managed platinum-selling Texas band Flyleaf.

The Meek and Mighty

Texarkana indie rock act, The Meek and Mighty is more than a band; it is a ministry. The band strives to let Christ’s love for us show in everything it does. God calls us to care for one another and bear one another’s burdens and The Meek and Mighty uses its music as a vehicle to do just that. The band features Detroit native, Weston Miller.

Ella Minnow

Critically recognized by the Dallas Observer, Ella Minnow, of Denton, plays a rock-jazz fusion with buzzing guitars, wailing vocals and jazzy rhythms. The band released two EPs in 2008, “The Quick & Clean EP” and “Blue Bear/Orange Shield.”

The Witz

Hailing from Fayetteville, Ark., The Witz is a two man act that delivers rock n’ roll in the true spirit of The Ramones and Eagles of Death Metal. The Witz are scheduled to release an EP this summer.
