Chisum, Prairiland girls top winners in pool

Prairiland’s Lady Patriots and Chisum’s Lady Mustangs were the top winners Thursday in the pool play portion of the 15th annual Chisum Volleyball Tournament.
Chisum was victorious in Pool A, with Hughes Springs, Mount Vernon and Tom Bean filling in the rest of the spots. Prairiland won Pool B, with James Bowie coming in second, Paul Pewitt in third and Clarksville in fourth.
So far, the tournament is on track for a potential Prairiland/Chisum championship match for the second year in a row. The Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Mustangs in a five-set thriller in last season’s tournament finale.
Tournament host Chisum began its successful day with a 25-15, 25-21 win over Hughes Springs. Shelbie Monkres led the squad in kill shots with six. Sierra Hurley had five kills, while Mercedes Graham added three kills and had eight digs. Taylor Halliburton had a team-high 10 assists, and Allie Moore had a team-high nine digs.
Monkres also led the Lady Mustangs with seven kills in their 25-11, 25-18 win over Tom Bean. Halliburton had seven assists, while Lauren Richardson contributed with four assists. Moore once again led the match with nine digs.
The Lady Mustangs finished the day with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-15 victory over Class 3A Mount Vernon. Hurley led Chisum with 10 kills. Monkres and Brooke McDade were close behind with nine kills apiece. Halliburton had 17 assists, and Moore had 12 digs.
The Chisum tournament continues Saturday with the bracket portion. Chisum faces Clarksville at 9 a.m. in the main gym, and James Bowie squares off against Mount Vernon at 10:30 a.m. in the auxiliary gym.
Hughes Springs faces Paul Pewitt at 9 a.m. in the auxiliary gym, and Prairiland competes against Tom Bean at 10:30 a.m. in the main gym.
Chisum (10-3) will host a home match against North Lamar today at 6 p.m.
