Prairiland Independent School District superintendent James Morton will resign his position effective Nov. 30, board members learned at a Tuesday meeting.
“It’s been a great time, but it’s time to retire,” Morton said of the decision. “I plan to do a little hunting and fishing; piddle around some and do a little traveling.”
“Hopefully we have made a little difference in children’s lives,” the educator said of his 37 years in the profession.
He has been Prairiland superintendent for the past nine years during which the district built a new high school, new athletic facilities and did major renovations to elementary campuses in Blossom and Deport.
“People have been good to me here and education has been good to me and my family,” Morton said. “I believe in education because I came from poor roots and education made a difference in my life. I want other children to have that same opportunity.”
Morton said he will still be around to help with a transition to a new superintendent. He makes his home in southern Lamar County, less than two miles from where he was born.
A Delmar High School graduate, Morton began teaching and coaching at North Hopkins in 1973, and spent time at both West Lamar and Delmar as teacher/coach and principal. Following Delmar/West Lamar consolidation, Morton remained at Chisum Independent School District until 1987, when he took an administrative position at Sulphur Bluff, serving the last seven years of his 15 years there as superintendent.
Morton said he will be leaving the district in good hands.
“You can’t find any better teachers, administrators, office staff, parents and students anywhere,” Morton said. “They won’t even know I am gone.”
