LAST MEETING: at Paris 55, at Van Alstyne 21 (2008)

2008 SEASON: Van Alstyne went 6-4 overall and 4-1 in district (lost in Division II bi-district). Paris 6-5 overall, 5-0 in District 10-3A (district champs, lost in bi-district)

Paris — RB Tyrell Smith, RB Aaron Ethridge, QB Corban Taylor, LB Cory Battle, LB Brandon Ortega, FS Dominique Mitchell, LB Kendall King, WR Tavairus Williams, DE Cedarious Hill, RB Tevin Gray, K Gabriel Vera

PARIS HIGH NOTES: Paris can clinch a second consecutive District 10-3A championship with a win and remain perfect in league play since dropping down to Class 3A. Currently Paris has won nine consecutive district games dating back to last year...The Wildcats turned a close first quarter into a 55-21 blowout last year against Van Alstyne, handing the Panthers their only league loss. Aaron Ethridge scored the first touchdown on a 55-yard run and finished with 131 yards on only eight carries for the Wildcats, who amassed 482 total yards to Van Alstyne’s 365...Wildcat sophomore QB Corban Taylor has passed for an RRV-best 1,501 yards (92-162-6) and 17 touchdowns, and is 219 yards away from breaking Quin Rollerson’s single-season record of 1,720 yards set last year in 11 games, including the playoff game. Taylor has completed passes to 10 different players. Sophomore WR Tavairus Williams has a team-high 25 catches for 508 yards and seven touchdowns, while RB Tyrell Smith has 20 catches for 312 yards and three scores. Smith also leads the team in rushing with 732 yards on 103 carries and has scored eight rushing touchdowns, while Ethridge has 603 yards on 85 totes and 12 rushing touchdowns. The Wildcats have scored eight touchdowns on defense and special teams this season, with LB Kendall King leading the way with four on interceptions, fumble returns and blocked put returns. LB Cory Battle has two interception returns for touchdowns, including an 85-yarder last week against Bonham. Paris’ defense has intercepted 15 passes and returned four for toucdowns. Senior DE Cedarius Hill leads the Wildcats in tackles with 81, including 35 solos. He also has 12 tackles for loss and 7 1/2 sacks, both team highs. Sophomore LB Brandon Ortega has 64 tackles, including 38 solos, while FS Dominique Mitchell has 61 tackles, including 44 solos. Battle has 51 and is second in TFLs with seven. Paris averages 353.6 yards a game offensively in a balanced spread attack. The Wildcats have 1,496 rushing yards and 1,686 passing. Defensively, Paris is allowing 288.9 yards a game, but has only allowed 155.5 a game in district play with 79 yards of that coming in the air. Paris is averaging 38.4 points and allowing 24.9 a game.

VAN ALSTYNE NOTES: Van Alstyne is also very balanced, averaging 408 yards a game. The Panthers have 1,718 yards passing and 1,548 rushing. QB Chris Burge has completed 95 of 154 attempts for 1,603 yards and 11 touchdowns while throwing seven interceptions. His main targets are Solomon Biscarro (seven catches for 523 yards and six touchdowns) and Chance Grayson (eight receptions for 491 yards and two scores). The Panthers’ ground attack is led by Orion Thomas, who has 828 yards rushing on 87 carries and seven touchdowns. Defensively, the Panthers are allowing 259 yards a game. Van Alstyne is averaging 35 points and allowing 17 a game.

NORTH LAMAR (2-7, 2-2) AT COMMERCE (1-8, 1-3)STADIUM: R.L. Maddox Stadium

KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m.

RADIO: 107.7 FM

LAST MEETING: at North Lamar 13, Commerce 7 (2008)

PLAYERS TO WATCH: North Lamar — S/WR T.J. Shirley, S/WR Canyon Conley, RB Dakota Boles, DE Will Harrington, TE Austin Parson, DT Matt Farmer, CB David Bozarth, QB Ryan White. Commerce - QB Terrance Walker, DB/RB Jurase Brown, LB Shea Gwin.

NORTH LAMAR NOTES: The Panthers will attempt to secure a playoff spot with a win over the Commerce Tigers after failing to clinch a postseason berth a week ago against Van Alstyne. In order to claim the third, and final, District 10-3A playoff spot, the easiest thing North Lamar can do to take the spot is just defeat Commerce. If Anna defeats Bonham on Friday and North Lamar loses to Commerce by fewer than 17 points, then North Lamar takes the playoff spot. An Anna loss against Bonham would mean the winner of the North Lamar/Commerce game would clinch a playoff berth. If the Panthers earn a playoff berth, they will be the district’s Division I representative and would face Prosper in the bi-district round. Paris High would be the Division I representative if North Lamar doesn’t make the playoffs...North Lamar suffered a 27-21 setback against Van Alstyne this past Friday after it failed to find the end zone on a last-minute drive, which was engineered by quarterback Ryan White. White passed for two touchdowns and a season-high 146 yards in the game. It also marked the first time in over a year that the Panthers gained more passing yards in a game than rushing yards. It also gave White 350 passing yares for the season with six touchdowns and three interceptions. T.J. Shirley is the team’s leading receiver with 145 yards on seven catches. Dakota Boles ran for 127 yards in the game. It was his sixth consecutive game with 100 or more rushing yards and he has 1,068 yards for the season. He has been aided by his offensive line, which has been led by senior Matt Farmer throughout this season...Through its nine games this season, North Lamar has held a halftime lead in five of them. Only two of those leads were held to the final buzzer.

COMMERCE NOTES: The Tigers have won only one game this season. That came earlier this season with a 42-6 triumph over Bonham. In Friday’s game against North Lamar, they will be seeking a similar outcome since they could potentially need to win by 17 or more points to seize a playoff berth. A year ago, Commerce played a close game against North Lamar at R.L. Maddox Stadium but ultimately suffered a 13-7 setback. Sophomore Jurace Brown is a spark plug on the Commerce team on both sides of the ball. A season ago, he intercepted seven passes on the defensive side of the ball. He is also a focal point of the team’s offensive attack at the running back position.

PRAIRILAND (9-0, 6-0) AT P. PEWITT (7-2, 6-0)

KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m.

LAST MEETING: Paul Pewitt 29, at Prairiland 22 (2008)

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Prairiland - QB Payne Schuelke, WR Tanner Connot, WR Zach McLamore, RB Randal Sessums, CB Justin Harris, LB Jay McKinney, RB Josh Esch. Paul Pewitt — RB/SS Jerry Braddock, RB Bam Finley, QB Jordan McFarland, LB Tanner Wright, LB Jacob Morton, CB Christian Olivas.

GAME NOTES: For the second consecutive season, this game will determine the District 12-2A champion since both teams enter the contest with flawless district records. A year ago, Prairiland closed a 21-point deficit and came close to tying the game late in the fourth quarter but ultimately lost to the Brahmas by a score of 29-22...Since the district slate began in Week 4, the two teams have been highly successful. Prairiland has an average margin of victory of 26 points against league opponents, while Pewitt has a slightly better margin with an average win of 30 points over the same foes...Pewitt lost all-state fullback D.J. Burleson, who was their top rusher a season ago, to injury before the season began. The team then fell in its first two games against the top two state-ranked Class 2A teams, Arp and Daingerfield, by a combined score of 97-7. The Brahmas earned their first win of the season in Week 2 with a 17-14 victory over Jefferson and haven’t lost since then...Pewitt is a team that likes to run the football and with its bruising running attack, it’s no wonder. Bam Finley (174 carries for 1,053 yards and 14 touchdowns) and Jerry Braddock (119 for 887 yards and 10 touchdowns) lead a rushing attack that has accounted for 3,040 yards this season. That’s compared to only 67 passing yards...Prairiland began its season with wins over North Forney’s junior varsity team, Collinsville and Harmony. It also worked through a shoulder injury to senior quarterback Payne Schuelke during that span. For the season, Schuelke has passed for 850 yards and 11 touchdowns with only three interceptions. RB Randal Sessums has rushed for 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns...Both Prairiland and Pewitt, along with Hooks, have clinched the district’s playoff spots. Hooks will enter the postseason as the Division I representative.

Eddington became the first player in the RRV to surpass the 2,000-yard mark in total offense. He has 2,005 yards rushing, passing and receiving entering Friday’s game. He has rushed for an RRV-best 1,459 yards on 153 carries and scored 18 rushing touchdowns. He has passed for 419 yards (42-88-6) and three touchdowns, and he has three receptions for 127 yards and two more TDs. He also leads the RRV in points scored with 136 points. Brian Glover has 431 yards rushing on 60 carries and five touchdowns while T.J. Brisco has 358 yards on 57 carries and four touchdowns. Glover leads the team in tackles with 71 after recording 15 last week against Rivercrest. Hasley has 61, including a team-high 19 tackles for loss and four sacks. Stephen North has 53 tackles, including 28 solos, while Sloan Moss has 44 tackles, including 35 solos.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Rivercrest — QB Brady Kennedy, RB Jordan White, WR Luke Wright, WR Jacob Wright, DB Michael Strunc, OL/DL Garret Anderson. Hooks — QB Aaron Doddy, LB Daniel Godfrey, WR Chris Campbell, WR Deonta Henderson, DE Ryan Godfrey.

GAME NOTES: The Rebels will be looking to end their season on a high note, while the Hornets will be seeking a win to add momentum for the playoffs. Rivercrest earned a victory over Hooks in the season finale this past year...Both Rivercrest and Hooks suffered setbacks this past Friday, with the Rebels falling to Chisum and the Hornets taking a loss against Prairiland...A win in the game would be progress for the Rivercrest program, as it would give the team one more victory than it had a season ago...Rivercrest junior QB Brady Kennedy has been one of the bright spots for the Rebels this season, as he is near the top of the Red River Valley in passing yards with 1,172 and eight touchdowns with six interceptions. Jacob Wright, Luke Wright and Kyle McCuller have been his primary targets. Luke Wright leads the team in receptions with 20. Jacob Wright leads the team in receiving yards with 378, while McCuller has 314 receiving yards. Kennedy leads the team in rushing yards with 559 and seven touchdowns. Garret Anderson is the team’s leading tackler with 78 this season.

HONEY GROVE (3-6, 2-4) AT LEONARD (7-2, 4-2)

KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m.

LAST MEETING: Leonard 42, at Honey Grove 14 (2008)

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Honey Grove - RB Zack Patt, QB Dillon Baugh, WR Courtland Finney, LB Jordan Mallicote, DB Corwin Louis. Leonard — QB Will Cowan, RB Reggie Robinson, WR Jake Buchanan, DL Tevin Daniels, DL Adam Clark.

Under first-year head coach Stuart Proctor, Detroit began the season with a record of 0-5 before stringing together wins over Union Hill and Big Sandy before being defeated by Hawkins and Maud in the next two games...The Detroit offense has been rejuventated this season after scoring only 89 points a season ago. If the Eagles can score 24 points in this game, that would be double their offensive output from last year. He has 410 rushing yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 308 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. Patt is also near the top of the team in tackles for the season.
