Though complicated, the right vote is 'yes'

Published November 1, 2009

It’s not rocket science, but the Paris Independent School District tax rollback election Tuesday is complicated.

But the simple thing is vote “yes” and the school district receives $2.35 million more yearly until the Texas Legislature changes school funding again. Vote “no” the tax rate remains the same and the district does not get the $2.35 million.

A no-brainer it would seem.

Things do become a bit more confusing when reading the ballot language, which states: “Approving the ad valorem tax rate of $1.455 per $100 valuation in the Paris ISD for the current year, a rate that is $.13 higher per $100 valuation than the school district rollback tax rate.”

But school taxes for this year already have been set at $1.325 per $100 valuation — 13 cents less — by the PISD Board of Trustees. Taxpayers can take a look at their 2009 statements from the Lamar County Appraisal District to verify the fact.

From The Paris News editorial board’s point of view, Tuesday’s rollback election is just a way for PISD to optimize state funding by jumping through one of the hoops state lawmakers continue to put before local school districts.

Help PISD jump through this hoop by voting “yes” on Tuesday.

It’s that simple.
