Paris High’s Wildcats kept their District 10-3A undefeated record intact Friday night, cruising to a 49-14 victory over winless Anna and remained tied atop the district standings.
The win was made easy by the fleet running back Aaron Ethridge, who raced for 168 yards on 16 carries and scored four of the ’Cats seven touchdowns.
The longest run of the night, however, came from Tyrell Smith, who raced 70 yards with 8:29 left in the second quarter for his only touchdown of the night.
Smith accumulated 135 yards on nine carries and helped boost the Wildcat rushing total to 334 yards on 31 tries from scrimmage.
Two Paris mistakes led to Anna’s only points.
It was the Coyotes’ defensive back Keith Lockhart who stepped up to take advantage of two ill-tossed Paris passes.
The first came with 2:25 left in the first period, when Lockhart stepped in front of a Wildcat receiver and picked a Corban Taylor toss at the Wildcats 42 and raced into the end zone to put Anna on top 7-0.
The second came in the second period, when the Coyotes had been forced to punt to the Wildcat 22. From there Taylor threw an errant pass and again Lockhart grabbed it.
That set up a six-play, 22-yard Coyote drive for a score, with Matt Williams going the final five yards.
Kicker Manuel Martinez booted both extra points, and that was all for Anna.
Paris defense refused to let the Coyotes move the ball on the ground, with defensive back Dominque Mitchell and lineman Colton Ingram leading the charge with six solo tackles each.
The Coyotes went three and out three times in the first half, and lost the ball on downs two other times.
Paris’ Cedaruis Hill and Jerred Guera each had five solo tackles.
Hill picked up a sack of Coyote quarterback Elliott in the second period, dropping him for a 10-yard loss. Elliott was held to minus one yard rushing on the night.
The Wildcat defense held the Coyotes to 175 yards total offense, only four of that coming through the passing game.
Anna’s premier running back Matt Williams was the workhorse, picking up 156 of those yards on 33 carries.
In turn, Paris picked up 78 yards on six Corbin pass completions in 11 tries.
Ethridge scored on runs of two, 15, 59 and 36 yards, displaying his break-away speed when he reached the Coyote secondary.
Paris wide receiver Tavairus Williams scored on a 13-yard pass from Corbin in the third period, and Wildcat linebacker Kendall King finished the Paris scoring with a 77-yard runback of a Coyote interception with 6:44 left in the game.
Kicker Gabriel Vera booted good on six of six extra point tries, and Andreas Rivera hit on one.
The Wildcats’ 412 yards total offense bested their 382.5 average against league opponents, as did the 49 points just slightly better than their 45 average against league opponents.
Anna dropped to 0-3 in District 10-3A action and 2-6 for the season.
Paris moved to 5-3 for the season but-3-0 in district to remain in a tie with Van Alstyne, which beat Commerce, 48-24, Friday night to remain unbeaten.
North Lamar plays Van Alstyle at North Lamar Friday night, and Paris will meet Bonham in the final game it will play at Noyes Stadium. Next season Paris will play in a new stadium being built with a new Paris High School building along Loop 286.
Tyrell Smith pushed his rushing totals for the year to 696 and his touchdowns to seven. Ethridge now has 530 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Paris district winning streak moved to eight straight games over two seasons.
