There’s a ‘Dinner Party’ at the Theater

Published June 17, 2009

Paris Community Theatre continues its 2008-2009 season with Neil Simon’s adult comedy, “The Dinner Party.” The play is filled with playful antics, mystery and masterful comic dialogue.

The curtain goes up at the Plaza Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday.

Set in a swanky Paris restaurant, “The Dinner Party” begins with the arrival of three Frenchmen, recipients of a mysterious invitation from an absent host. One by one, three more unexpected guests — their ex-wives — also arrive, and what has started out as a traditional French farce takes a turn into serious drama leavened by humor.

As the couples take turns dissecting their former marriages, through the quips and witty wordplay, three bittersweet marital portraits emerge in all their sorrow and cruelty, tender memories and intimate betrayals.

The cast of this adult-themed show includes Paul Dearinger, Mike Pickering, David Fielding, Michelle Jewett, Ashley Pickering, and Laura Hutchings. It is directed by Tim J. Wood.

“This has been a great time,” said Wood. “This cast has made this production a constant pleasure to work on.

“It’s a different play for PCT,” Woods continued. “It’s a one-act, running an hour and a half without an intermission, but it’s probably Simon’s most intimate work he ever completed and it’s an intense hour and a half. The show is about adults talking about adult themes and intimate details of their marriage. Over the course of an evening, you find out a lot about these couples, all of it; the good, the bad, the ugly.“

Wood is assisted back stage by assistant directors Juan and Lindsey Espinosa, as well as John Presley Wright on set design, and Ray E. Karrer and J. Richard Fields on lighting designs. Set dressing/props is handled by Sydney Young and Caryn Resnick and costume design/coordination is accomplished by Rebecca Robinson and Sydney Young.

Sound operator for the production is Jeff Higgins and light board operators are Juan Espinosa, Lindsey Espinosa, and Amy Braswell Burrows. Members of the set building/painting crew include John Presley Wright, Mike and Ashley Pickering, David Fielding, Michelle Jewett, Macy Inmon and Alan Jones.

Performance dates, showtimes and tickets prices for “The Dinner Party” are Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, 8 p.m., $10; Sunday, June 21, 2:30 p.m., $8; Thursday, June 25, 7:30 p.m., $8; Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27, 8 p.m., $10 and Sunday, June 28, 2:30 p.m., $8.
