Chisum boys, girls sweep Paul Pewitt squads

Chisum junior guard Dax Holt spurred a first-quarter run with two layups off steals, and he knocked down four three-pointers to lead the Mustangs to a 54-23 thumping of Paul Pewitt Saturday night in the District 12-2A opener.
Holt finished with a game-high 18 points of 7 of 9 shooting from the floor and was the only player in the game to score in double figures. He also had three steals.
Chisum (9-7, 1-0) led from start-to-finish after (9-7, 1-0) jumping ahead 13-2 in the first quarter, and holding the Brahamas (2-10, 0-1) to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.
Jeremy Eddington scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds for Chisum, while Matt Tillett scored eight points, grabbed six boards and had one block. Van Hilburn added seven points and hauled in six rebounds, while Donterious Record had grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with three points.
Hayden Lee nailed a second-quarter three that left Pewitt down 17-6, but the Brahamas never cut it to single digits in the second quarter or for the remainder of the game. Holt’s first three pointer came with 55 seconds left in the second quarter and Eddington’s monster slam with 12 seconds left sent the Mustangs into halftime leading 54-23.
In the third quarter, Pewitt pulled to within 11, but the Mustangs used an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 29-14 behind two baskets from Hilburn and two more from Eddington and Tillett.
Chisum led 39-16 heading into the final period, and Holt put the game out of reach by nailing three threes in the period for the Mustangs. Garrett Jones helped seal the win by nailing a free throw and scoring on a putback in the final minutes.
The Mustangs travel to third-ranked Clarksville on Tuesday for their second district game.
• Chisum’s junior varsity boys squad cruised to a 69-20 victory over Paul Pewitt. Landon Smith scored a game-high 24 points, while Brad Easton and Jonathan Carroll added 10 and nine points, respectively.

Chisum 48, Paul Pewitt 36 (G)
The Chisum Lady Mustangs handed Paul Pewitt its first District 12-2A loss Saturday night when they beat the visiting Lady Brahamas, 48-36.
Chisum (8-11, 2-1) led 10-6 after one quarter and carried a 28-16 lead into halftime.
Three Lady Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Mercedes Graham who had 15 points, including 10 points in the second quarter. Shelbie Monkres and Shelbi Barnett each added 12 points.
The Lady Mustangs closed the door on Pewitt (8-8, 2-1) by outscoring the visiting Lady Brahamas 15-10 in the fourth quarter. Chisum made 7 of 11 free throws in that period.
Chisum resumes District 12-2A play on Tuesday at Clarksville.
