Patriots dominate Collinsville, 35-7

Published September 6, 2009

PATTONVILLE — The Prairiland Patriots all but shut down the Collinsville Pirates Friday with a 35-7 victory in the team’s second romp over its opponents in as many weeks.

The Patriots (2-0) demonstrated talent on both sides of the ball with a powerful running game interspersed with accurate passes and a hard hitting defense, which caused numerous turnovers.

“We had good pass coverage; had a couple of interceptions and caused several fumbles,” Patriot coach Glen Schuelke said following the game. “But we allowed too many drives of six to 10 plays.”

Collinsville’s longest drive — 11 plays from the Pirate’s 27 to the Patriot’s 30 — ended in a fumble recovered by junior linebacker Jay McKinney on the Patriot 30-yard line. McKinney’s effort set up the third Prairiland touchdown of the game, a 70-yard scamper to pay dirt by power tailback Randal Sessums in the second quarter of the game.

Prairiland drew first blood on the team’s first drive two and a half minutes into the game on a 32-yard pass from quarterback Tanner Connot to tight end Zach McLamore. Connot filled in at quarterback for Payne Schuelke, who suffered a separated shoulder in the opener against North Forney and is expected to be out of action until the team’s first District 12-2A contest of the season against the Clarksville Tigers.

Setting up the score, receiver Josh Esch returned the opening kickoff to midfield. Sessums and Connot rammed the ball to the 32-yard line. Zach McLamore split the uprights, making the score 7-0.

A four-and-out exchange, followed by another single series by the Pirates set the Patriots up for a 58-yard drive, with Sessums and Connot alternating carries to the 2-yard line where Connot finished the drive with a sneak. McLamore’s kick was good for a 14-0 score with 3 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Collinsville made its lone score following a Prairiland fumble in the final minutes of the second quarter. The team took over on the Prairiland 45-yard line, and after a pass interference call on the Patriots, the Pirates found themselves on the 20-yard line. Another completion from quarterback Cory Ragsdale to receiver Chris Carney and a kick by Tyler Ford put seven on the board.

In the opening seconds of the second half, Patriot defender Ryley Johnson knocked the ball from the hands of a Pirate receiver and defensive end Jarid Lyles recovered on the 13-yard line. Sessums took it to pay dirt on the next play and Connot converted for two to make the score 28-7 with 11:46 remaining in the quarter.

Six minutes later, Sessums ran the ball 57 yards to the Pirate 21-yard line. On a fourth down and short on the 11-yard line, Connot ran a keeper with 5:13 on the clock. A McLamore extra point ended the scoring at 35-7.

The Pirates would drive deep to the 7-yard line once in the fourth quarter, but were denied a score by the defensive work of Connot, defensive tackle Chase Stogsdill, defensive end Lyles and defensive tackle Brian Jones.

Prairiland faces Harmony next week at home, a team Schuelke calls “the best team we’ll face in non-district.” The Patriots won a 2008 matchup 26-10.

“We would like to finish 3-0 in non-district,” Schuelke said. “We are taking it one game at a time.”
