Mustangs run wild against Rebels

Published November 1, 2009

BOGATA — Chisum’s Mustangs brought an uncontrollable ground game to Rivercrest’s Rebel Stadium Friday night and rolled over the Rebels 42-6 in District 12-2A.

It was a matchup seemingly made for Mustang quarterback Jeremy Eddington, who raced for 212 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns on runs of 11 and 61 yards.

The workhorse for Chisum was running back Brian Glover, who gained 136 yards on 11 carries and added two touchdowns of his own on runs of 18 and 20 yards.

Eddington called on Glover often to plunge through the middle of his offensive line for needed first-down yardage.

Glover’s effect on the game also was noted on defense. He had 14 solo tackles in the game. Mason Justiss had six solo tackles and Kolton Porter had five.

“I am proud of how they came out and played and practiced this week, especially knowing that they are out of the playoff hunt,” said Chisum Head Coach Don Hasley. “These kids know they can still finish with a winning record.”

Chisum pulled its district record to 3-3, and a win against Redwater in the final game next week would produce a winning district record.

“It is going to be a battle next week,” Hasley said.

Friday night, the Mustangs chalked up 408 yards total offense, while Rivercrest managed 203.

But it was Rivercrest’s determined drive in the waning moments of the game that stirred the small group of football fans on one of the coldest nights of the year.

Still scoreless in the game, Rivercrest running back Jordan White took a Chisum kickoff back to the Mustang 37-yard line. A Chisum penalty put the ball at the 22.

Three more Rebel plays put the ball at the 3-yard line and gave the Rebels a first down. Then, the field was littered with yellow flags. When referees sorted it out, the Rebels were hit with three 15-yard penalties that pushed them back into their own end of the field at the 47.

Determined to get the yards back, Rivercrest quarterback Brady Kennedy dropped back and tossed a 31-yard pass to Kyle McCuller, who was tackled at the Chisum 22-yard line.

Eight plays later, Kennedy hit end Seton Hawkins on a two-yard slant to finally put Rivercrest on the scoreboard.

The extra point kick was blocked, and the score stood at 42-6 with 3:40 left in the game.

Brian Millsap scored on a nine-yard pass from Eddington, and Porter picked up a loose Rivercrest fumble and raced 68 yards for the remaining Chisum touchdown.

Defensively, Chisum stopped Rivercrest 10 times for negative yardage.
