CLARKSVILLE — City of Clarksville residents voted more than two to one against passing a bond for the Clarksville Independent School District in the Tuesday election.
On the tail of a failed 2007 bond election, a failed bond election Tuesday means Clarksville Elementary School will continue operating on its 64-year-old foundation.
In a city with a population just under 3,500, a total of 1,513 voters took to the polls, with an overwhelming result of 1,069 against passing the bond and 444 in favor of the bond.
According to a statement by Pam Bryant, Clarksville ISD superintendent, the oldest section of Clarksville Elementary School was built in 1945 and renovated in the mid 1980s. Temporary buildings that have been in place for 21 years are still in use.
The proposed elementary school is a 75,000 square foot facility to completely replace the school’s current aging facilities.
The plans for the new facility include more than 40 classrooms, computer and science labs, a library, gym, cafeteria and storage and administrative offices.
