Family fun for all across the valley

Published October 15, 2009

At least three big events will take place this week to entertain and excite hometown crowds, and area residents can attend all three.

Tonight, Perser Melody will present a southern gospel event at 7 p.m. at Love Civic Center. Admission is $5. Children under 12 get in free.

The award-winning duo of Douglas and Lori Perser are in Paris as part of their music ministry tour.

They write and perform their own original songs.

On Saturday, area residents can have some fun and contribute to a worthy cause at the Red River Valley Buddy Walk. The event, which promotes the Red River Valley Down Syndrome Society, begins at 2 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion at Love Civic Center. Walkers will stroll along Trail de Paris.

Activities for the whole family will be held, including bounce houses and slides, carnival games with prizes and music. Dallas children’s entertainer David Chicken also will be performing during the event.

Then, Friday and Saturday, the annual Chigger Festival will take place in Delta County.

It is an even bigger festival than ever before, and is expected to draw big crowds to Cooper’s historic downtown square.

Delta County Chamber of Commerce officials have promised an itchin’ good time, and from the events scheduled, it appears they will be true to their word.

Chiggerfest will include a 5K walk and run, a Lil’ Miss and Mr. Chigger Pageant, a health fair, cake walk and lots of events for youngsters.

Area residents can take advantage of the health fair from 8 a.m. to noon at the Delta County Civic Center, where they can get health screenings and other health information.

Chiggerfest events actually start Friday night, when visitors can dance the night away or just listen to the music of Delta County native Royce Slough on the square.

For those who are challenge minded, there are many contests to enter.

Youngsters will have an opportunity to try out their skills at a bike rodeo, join in a sidewalk art event, show off their pets in a pet parade and join in many other events.

Adults and youngsters can enjoy an old fashioned cake walk.

These are events visitors can enjoy at little or no expense.
