Monkres named MVP

Published November 23, 2009

It was a season without a district championship for the Chisum Lady Mustangs. However, Chisum did boast the District 12-2A Most Valuable Player on its squad.

Senior middle blocker Shelbie Monkres was named MVP of the district, according to a release issued recently by the league’s coaches.

Monkres was the top hitter and blocker for the Lady Mustangs, as she finished with 175 kills and 54 blocks.

Chisum, which earned a second-place finish in the district this season, earned another superlatative award. Senior setter Taylor Halliburton was named a Co-Most Valuable Setter. She shared the award with Hooks’ Amber Rains. Halliburton had 210 assists this season.

The Prairiland Lady Patriots, who earned yet another district championship this season, earned a pair of superlative awards as well.

Senior middle blocker Taylor Skidmore was selected as the district’s Most Valuable Blocker. She was a constant threat to opposing teams, as she clogged the middle of the court and blocked numerous shots throughout the season. She also had 91 kills in matches against district opponents.

Lady Patriot head coach Brandon Oats received Coach of the Year honors.

Chisum senior middle blocker Sierra Hurley, Prairiland senior Kelti Mowery and Prairiland sophomore Sara Beth Upchurch were named to the All-District First Team.

Hurley had 139 kills, 26 blocks and seven aces. Mowery had 89 kills and 146 digs during district play, and she led the team in kills for the season with 283. Upchurch had a team-high 102 kills during district play to go along with a team-high 167 digs.
