CLARKSVILLE — Visitors to Clarksville attorney Dan Meehan’s office first must pass the scrutiny of Henry, his 14-year-old sidekick.

Henry, once a stray dog who showed up at the home of another attorney, Dave Turner, was a gift from Turner to Meehan.

In fact, it was Turner who gave Henry his name 13 years ago.

“He named him after Henry Braswell,” Meehan said of the late 6th District Judge.

Meehan lives approximately one mile from his office, which is across the street from the Red River County Courthouse.

One day, Henry just showed up on the steps of Meehan’s office, and now makes the trip there regularly.

“He just came walking up the sidewalk one day, and my secretary called me and asked: ‘What is Henry doing here?’” Meehan said.

“He likes to come in and lie beside my desk and soak up the air conditioning,” Meehan said. “The funny thing is he doesn’t like riding down here in my pickup. He prefers to make the trip on his own, greeting people and making friends along the way.”

Henry has made many friends along the route, and some of them usually call Meehan’s office to let him know Henry is on his way down.

“Everybody seems to know him,” Meehan said.

Henry is cautious when meeting new people, first wanting to get a good sniff before accepting them as friends.

One of the familiar sights around Clarksville is Meehan sitting on his steps talking to Henry.

“We lived in the country several years, and Henry would ride in the truck some, but when I bought a house in town a couple of years ago, that is when Henry began showing up at work,” Meehan said. “He just comes when he is in the mood. He doesn’t work a five-day week, and some days he won’t even ride home in my truck, preferring to walk instead.”

Meehan said when big city lawyers visit his office, they are envious of his being able to have his dog at work.

“They sometimes envy the life of a country lawyer,” he said.
