Clarksville Tigers maintain perfect record

CLARKSVILLE — After defeating the Gladewater Sabine Cardinals in a battle of state-ranked teams this past Saturday and climbing to the No. 3 ranking in the latest Class 2A Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, the Clarksville Blue Tigers didn't have much of a let-down when they faced the Mt. Vernon Tigers in the Clarksville gym on Tuesday night.
Clarksville roared to a decisive 86-50 victory to improve its record to 5-0.
All 12 members of the Clarksville squad received plenty of playing time, as Clarksville took the lead for good when leading scorer Jarrion Roberts scored inside with 7:41 left in the first quarter.
Freshman reserve guard Quinton Beaty's 3-pointer triggered a 9-0 run to end the first quarter. The run sent the Blue Tigers into the second quarter in control, 20-7.
Clarksville proved to be deadly from long range, as the team connected on eight 3-pointers. That included two treys apiece from reserves Keyondrian Harris, Devonte Shavers and Lonnie Hobbs.
Clarksville's lead grew to 46-22 at the intermission and the advantage was 67-31 as the teams journeyed into the final period.
The Tigers' pressure defense was able to cause lots of problems for the visiting Tigers, as Clarksville forced an alarming number of turnovers.
The Blue Tigers connected on 12 of 18 free throw attempts while Mount Vernon made just 12 of 29 attempts.
Roberts, a sophomore, led Clarksville in scoring with 16 points while senior guard Demontrae Scales was able to slice inside for several field goals while also producing a 3-pointer as he scored 12 points. H.B. Rosser again played steady defensively and reached double figures with 10 points. Beaty joined sophomore Radonte Edwards in scoring 9 points each.
Mount Vernon was led by J. Wright with 12 points while H. Fox followed with 11 points.
The Tigers will open play in the New Boston Gunslinger Tournament on this Thursday evening by facing the Liberty Eylau Leopards. The tournament will run through Saturday.
• The Clarksville junior varsity came from behind on Tuesday night to defeat Mt. Vernon, 58-52.
Kelton Scales produced 18 points to lead the Tigers, while Trea O'Neal added 11 and Anthony Miles joined Raheem Ricks in contributing six points each.
