Spirit of Giving needs community support

Published October 30, 2009

I am taking this time to make our community and businesses aware of The Spirit of Giving — a desire of many to make giving become a reality.

Yes, there are many ways we help others throughout the world, but this is a way to help our own community.

This event, which is held yearly on the parking lot of First United Methodist Church, takes place Dec. 19. If you would like to donate to the Spirit of Giving, whether it is time or other forms of donation, your efforts would be sincerely appreciated. You may even as a business, want to join us and set up to give your help.

I myself would greatly appreciate it, and many others that feel so strongly about what we are doing would also. We as a church do as much as we can to make this happen, but as it grows, we are looking to outside help.

My question to you is: “Have you ever been touched deeply in the heart?” To see true love as people surrounding you give and give from the heart and soul to see the joy on another’s face. To know you have done what the Lord and Savior has asked you to do. I have and will continue to see this at the church I attend.

First United Methodist Church of Paris is reaching out to those in need through their Spirit of Giving campaign held annually now since December 2007. Why sell it when it can be given away? So many people give things and expect in return, but it is always better to give than receive.

Yes, there are many ways people help one another throughout the world. Donations for many diseases, missions to other countries and many other ways. First United Methodist Church in Paris also does the same, but the Spirit of Giving is a way local churches and other organizations can turn to their own community to give back.

What is now our annual community Christmas party does exactly this. It is a non-profit party for our community. Our true desire is to spread this throughout every church and community to allow others to benefit from what we have and will continue to experience.

We are not wanting to keep this as our own, but to spread this and watch God’s glory and love reach throughout the world through the act of selfless giving. Old idea true, but a new way of doing it.

I truly hope that it will be a blessing that will take your church or business to the next level of spiritual love. We welcome any church or organization to set up their own booth at The Spirit of Giving.

Those that read this and wish to learn more or would like to donate items to be given away at the Spirit of Giving please contact Michael Wood at jc4unme316(at)yahoo.com or myself at tonylivingston42(at)yahoo.com.

Thank you for your time in reading this message. God Bless you and your families.

Tony Livingston is a Paris resident, a member of First United Methodist Church and an organizer for this year’s The Spirit of Giving.
