ROXTON — Roaring cars and bumpy roads provided the excitement Saturday as Rallye America brought its fast pace auto performance event to the country roads around Roxton.
A few fender benders and wheel alignment problems were the order of the day, as 10 drivers matched time trials that sometimes saw speeds far above 100 miles an hour along roads that even the best civilian drivers would be challenged at 30 miles per hour.
Rallye chairman Juanita Miller said the conditions were great for the time trials despite the bumpy conditions caused by heavy rains in the past two months.
“It was a bit muddy in spots,” Miller said, pointing to her mud-covered car.
Drivers were given a 30-minute pit stop after completing the first half of the morning trials, then they had to hit the road once more.
The first time tests were completed at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with a second run beginning at 2:30 p.m.
During the first pit stop, driver James Haas and his crew were wrestling with wheel problems.
“I don’t know what happened out there, but the left wheel began to get a little rough,” Haas said. “But the conditions were great for the trials.”
Driver Bradley Fast found a different problem on his first run.
“I spun out and hit a tree,” he said, looking over his dented front fender. “But that won’t slow me down. The conditions are awesome out there — just great.”
on the challenging race paths.
They compete on time trials on a specified course, then switch to a second course.
A driver’s accumulated time on the course is matched with all other drivers to determine a winner.
An awards presentation followed the performance trials.
Juanita and Richard Miller of Armadillo Rally Logistics and Rally Engineering put the time trials together.
Areas were set aside along the race paths for spectators.
The awards banquet took place in Roxton Independent School District Fine Arts Building.
