Summer is almost over and Lamar County 4-H members are gearing up to head back for another year of school, but before they do, let me tell you about all the things they’ve been doing during the last part of this summer.
We had two members participate in the State Dog Show held in College Station. Melody Shannon, Prairiland 4-H Club placed second in the Junior Division Pre-Novice Showmanship Class. Her sister, Heather, from the same club, was awarded a Blue ribbon in the Dog Show Photography Contest in the Dog-Color Digital Class. These two young ladies joined 4-H back in the spring and jumped in with both feet.
I couldn’t be more proud of the way they took the bull by the horns and were determined to go to the Dog Show and represent our county program.
On July 9, District IV Recordbook judging was held at TAMU Dallas, and Lamar County was well represented at this year’s event. For those of you that don’t know about 4-H Recordbooks, it is an accomplishment in itself to complete one and submit it for judging. The Recordbook consists of a story detailing all their experiences in 4-H, as well as records from their projects and other leadership activities. I am really proud of the members that took the time necessary to put together a Recordbook. Not many 4-H members actually take the time to do this, so these members deserve an extra pat on the back for their efforts. Members who turned in Recordbooks were, Abigail, Audrey, and Madelyn Gooding, Beth Ann Dougherty, Nathan Newman, David Newman, Cole Wright, Misty Jackson, Melody Shannon and Codi Clark.
At District IV Extreme Leadership Camp, which was held in June, Nathan Newman from the Roxton 4-H Club was elected as District IV 1st vice-president. As part of his duties, he is given the great honor of serving on the Texas 4-H Council. Newman recently attended State 4-H Council Training which was held in Lubb, ock during the last week of July. We are very proud of the job he’s done over the past year serving as our county council president, and look forward to having a State 4-H Officer as part of our county council during the upcoming year.
I’m also sure some of you have been hit up by cute little 4-H members asking you to make a $5 donation for a chance to win four Dallas Cowboy
Tickets. We had a very generous member of the community donate four tickets to Game 3 of the Dallas Cowboys pre-season. We held the drawing this past Monday and Don Dickerson from Powderly was the lucky winner. A huge “Thank You” goes out to him and all of the other members of our community who chose to support the 4-H program. Without all of them, our 4-H program would not be able to keep running.
As I come to a conclusion in my rambling, I would like to say that with our annual Awards Banquet this coming Saturday night, we will close another chapter on the Lamar County 4-H and at the same time open up another one with a new leadership team with their own set of goals and ambitions for the 2009-2010 year in 4-H. With that in mind, I would like to thank the parents, volunteers and the 2008-2009 Lamar County 4-H council officer team. Without supportive parents and volunteers, 4-H would not exist — end of story! 2008-2009 council officers have had a very successful year and the hard work and determination has not gone unnoticed. I look forward to working with them again this next year as we work towards establishing one of the best 4-H programs in the entire state. Keep It Green!
