Lamar County Commissioners gave approval Monday for a new inmate telephone system for the Lamar County Jail.
Commissioners approved a contract with Securus Technologies in which that firm will provide the system and pay the county 25 percent of the income from the system.
The county had been receiving 22 percent.
Securus also agreed to give the county $50,000 for the sheriff’s department to be spent on new equipment.
Sheriff B.J. McCoy indicated he would be looking at purchasing a new van, digital cameras and in-car video equipment with the grant.
“We have been collecting approximately $3,000 per month from the inmate telephone system, and I expect that figure will be about the same,” Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville said.
Commissioners also approved a $2,000 agreement with Eco Systems Environmental, Inc. for a phase I study assessment of the Hickory House property the county has proposed to buy north of the Lamar County Courthouse.
In other action, the commissioners:
•approved the plat for the Cedar Woods subdivision in the northwest section of the county. That subdivision covers 33.9 acres of land near County Road 36120.
The subdivision sparked directed comments from Commissioner Jackie Wheeler, who said: “If the developers do not fulfill their obligations, the residents will want the county to accept the road and take care of them. If we accept this plat, there is no assurance they will complete the project.”
Superville said: “It is like the chicken and the egg. If they don’t have the money to build the road, they can’t sell a lot, and if they can’t sell a lot, they won’t have the money to build a road.
• received the required annual racial profiling compliance report from Precinct 3 Constable Larry Cope.
• received certification of Precinct 3 Commissioner Rodney Pollard’s completion of courses in the senior officials workshop and terrorism incident preparedness training. Pollard also was certified by the state’s attorney general for courses completed satisfying the legal requirements of the county code.
• received the treasurer’s report ending Dec. 31, from County Treasurer Shirley Fults that shows the county with $4.97 million in available funds.
• received County Auditor Kevin Parsons’ auditor’s month financial statement ending 2007.
