CLARKSVILLE — When the Clarksville Blue Tigers entered their season opener at home on Monday night against New Boston, coach Joe Sigler and his team knew the visiting Lions would come out gunning for the host team.
But Clarksville answered the call, as the seventh-ranked Class 2A team in the state knocked down nine 3-pointers en route to a decisive 75-58 victory over the New Boston squad.
"Any time you have that many kids that can do that, then it's only going to get better. The thing that we have to do is learn to do that in the framework of what we do," Sigler said.
Clarksville (1-0) didn't have an outstanding performance according to Sigler, but with the talent on the squad, better days are expected to be ahead.
The contest was marred by turnovers, but it was the Tigers who broke the game open with 31 second-quarter points.
"My big concern was playing for the first time in front of their parents, girlfriends and friends and how they were going to respond to that, and we have work to do," Sigler said. "I thought that we had too many turnovers and I'm not pleased with the way we handled the half-court and full-court press. But it's always easier to recover when we win then it would have been if we had lost it."
The Blue Tigers were hit by foul trouble early in the game, as 6-5 freshman post player Gary Moore was the first to leave the game after recording his second personal with 6:37 left in the opening quarter. He would not return until the second half.
Starting guard H.B. Rosser would eventually foul out of the game in the second half after scoring five points and Jerrion Roberts, who was impressive down low, ended the game with four fouls but still scored a game-high 16 points.
The game was low-scoring in the initial quarter, as both teams had problems connecting from the field and turnovers were plentiful. The Tigers held a 13-11 advantage as the teams moved to the second period.
Back-to-back steals and layups by Roberts opened scoring in the second period and a 3-pointer from Rosser extended the advantage to 20-12 with 6:37 left in the first half. New Boston eventually sliced the lead to 20-16.
However, Clarksville took command by knocking down four more treys in the quarter, with Radonte Edwards and Quinton Beaty connecting on one each in the quarter while Keyondrian Harris drilled two of his game-high three in the frame.
The Tigers moved to a 20-point lead when starting guard Demontrae Scales chipped in a pair of free throws with 1:10 left in the period. Clarksville moved to the intermission leading 44-26.
Sigler was able to allow all 12 members of his team to receive game action, including two more freshmen (Beaty and Lonnie Hobbs) and sophomore Jordan Alexander, who scored 10 points.
Senior Dariel Rosser and Devonta Shavers played some strong minutes in reserve roles, as did sophomore newcomer Chris Mitchell.
The Lions managed to cut the deficit to just 15 points on two occasions in the third and the Blue Tigers entered the final quarter leading 58-43.
Sigler opened the season with senior Scales joining sophomores Edwards, Roberts and Rosser and freshman Moore in the starting lineup.
The Tigers' performance was not impressive from the charity stripe, where they converted just 6 of 18 attempts.
Edwards was the remaining Tiger in double figures with 14 points. Harris scored nine points and Scales contributed eight.
Clarksville will have another tough task tonight when Sigler's team travels to Texarkana to face the Class 3A fourth-ranked Pleasant Grove Hawks.
• The Clarksville junior varsity team mounted an outstanding effort to almost erase a 19-point deficit, but fell 57-52 to New Boston in the opening game of the night.
Demarcus Bell and Trea O'Neal scored 13 points each to lead Clarksville while Kelton Scales added nine points.
