Itchin’ for a good time?

Published October 12, 2009

COOPER — It’s time for a celebration of the little red critters.

Delta County’s annual Chigger Festival 2009 will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, on the historic Cooper square.

Several events will take place, including an appearance by Elvis impersonator Royce Slough and performances on the Chigger Main Stage by Crowldaddy’s, Amy Mayes Patrick, Hard Times, Wendy Cold & Rain, Dr. Doctor and Fat Tuesday.

A Chigger 5K Walk and Run will be held, along with a Lil’ Miss & Mister Chigger Pageant, a Health Fair, Cake Walk and food and craft vendors.

Events include a shoe box float contest, art and craft fair, sidewalk chalk art, a bicycle rally and pet parade.

The Chigger Festival also will include a street dance and raffle.

The Delta County Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event, promises an “itchin’ good time” for all who attend.

The Health Fair at Chiggerfest will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Delta County Civic Center and is sponsored by Cooper Home Health.

Health screenings and information will be available and blood pressure checks, glucose checks, blood oxygen level checks and cholesterol checks will be available.

Directors of the Delta County Chamber of Commerce are putting the finishing touches on the 2009 event, the 16th year of Chiggerfest, which includes an all-day music venue, an expanded kids zone and dozens of other events.

Kicking off Chiggerfest, visitors will be able to dance the night away on the square around the gazebo Friday night to lots of oldies played by Delta County native Royce Slough.

People can bring their lawn chairs to listen to the music.

Saturday will start with a pancake breakfast, hosted by the Lions Club followed by Chiggerfest opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on the main stage.

The health fair will include more than a dozen health-care related vendors offering a unique opportunity for health screenings.

The 5k run and walk begins at 8 a.m.

A Mr. and Miss Chigger Pageant takes place shortly after.

A new event this year is the shoe box float contest, with decorated shoe boxes. Entries will be judged on originality, neatness, overall appearance, craftsmanship, use of materials and theme.

Any size shoe box can become a float.

Entries must be brought to the gazebo by 9 a.m. Saturday.

Artisans are invited to compete in the arts and crafts exhibit and competition at the Civic Center.

Categories of competition are artwork, quilts and photography. Divisions will be elementary, junior high, high school, adult and professional and adult and non-professional.

First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded.

More information can be obtained by calling 903-395-4566 or 903-348-8391.

For the kids, an annual bike rodeo, sidewalk chalk art contest, and a separate category for kids at the arts and crafts fair are included.

The pet parade gives all pet owners an opportunity to show off their pets. Costumes are encouraged.

A cake walk gives young and old an opportunity to take home a treat.
