Chisum eases past Bonham

Published November 22, 2009

The Chisum Mustangs turned a close game into a double-digit victory Friday night in their home opener as they defeated the Bonham Warriors, 53-38, to move to 2-0 on the season.

Leading 37-30 entering the fourth quarter, Chisum’s patient offensive attack paid off, as the Mustangs built a double-digit lead by working the ball inside to 6-5 senior post Matt Tillett and senior power forward Jeremy Eddington.

Tillett scored seven of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a double-double by grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking three shots.

“Matt Tillett played very well. He blocked shots, rebounded and, toward the end of the game, he made some very big free throws,” said Chisum coach David Wilson of Tillett, who nailed two free throws at the 2:35 mark that gave Chisum a 44-32 advantage.

Bonham’s Daine Dunlap came back seconds later and drained a three-pointer to cut the Warriors deficit to 44-35, but a basket inside by Van Hilburn put the Mustangs back ahead by double digits.

A flurry of baskets were scored in the final minute, but it was two free throws and a basket off a fastbreak by Jeremy Eddington that sealed the Mustangs win. Eddington led all scorers with 20 points, and he also grabbed six boards.

Chisum was playing without starting point guard Kaleb Jackson, but senior Zach Millsap did a good job of filling that role, finishing with seven points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals in a stellar all-around game.

Chisum shot 50 percent from the floor, making 22 of 44 shots. Bonham made 14 of 43 attempts (33 percent) and committed 17 turnovers to Chisum’s 15.

The Warriors led early in the game, jumping ahead 4-0 on baskets by Dunlap and Vince Slider. Dunlap led the Warriors in scoring with 11, while Slider and Hunter Herriage each scored 10.

Back-to-back baskets by Tillett and Eddington tied the game at 4-4 with 5:48 left in the opening stanza, and two more baskets by Tillett put Chisum ahead 8-4.

Bonham came back and regained the lead late in the first when Herriage nailed a mid-range jumper then closed out the period with a three-pointer, giving the Warriors an 11-10 advantage.

Chisum held Bonham to single-digit scoring in two of the four periods, including the second quarter that saw the Mustangs outscore the Warriors 13-7 to take a 23-18 lead into halftime.

Eddington scored seven of his 20 points in the second quarter, while Millsap scored four.

In the third quarter, Bonham tied the game at 30-30 when Slider nailed his second of three three-pointers at the 3:21 mark, then knocked down a runner off a Chisum turnover at the 2:45 mark.

Chisum finished the period on a 7-0 run to take a 37-30 lead into the fourth quarter. A jumper by Stephen North at the 1:40 mark of the third put Chisum back up, then Dax Holt nailed a long-range three, and Eddington scored on putback to close out the period.

“The kids played hard. Everybody that came into the game contributed and that’s what it’s all about. I feel confident that anytime I send somebody into the game there won’t be a drop-off. Last year, I felt a little uneasy when I had to substitute, but not this year,” said Wilson.

Chisum hosts Honey Grove on Tuesday.
