Hit the road for great bargains, good time

Published June 1, 2009

It’s that time again, and with the economy the way it is, not a moment too soon. Time to plan your route, gas up the car and head out for a road trip. The Hwy. 82/287 Yard Sale gets underway this weekend, featuring 350 miles filled with fantastic finds and great bargains.

This Friday and Saturday, plan a trip along Highway 82 from New Boston to Seymour and Highway 287 from Vernon to Bowie. Highway 82 runs right smack through Paris and Reno, and locals are preparing to offer everything under the sun, including sunshade umbrellas.

Two major gathering places for sales include the Market Square on South First Street and the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce Santa Fe Depot at 1125 Bonham St. Downtown businesses also will get into the dustup with sidewalk sales in addition to special bargains and discounted items. As an added bonus, a portion of these sales from the downtown merchants will be turned over to the fund set aside to refurbish the Grand Theater marquee.

The Chamber staff is kindly creating a map for travelers to find vendor locations in the area. Stop by Spanglers, Paris Framing and Design, Daniel Gallery, Noble True Value Hardware, Scholl Brothers Bar-B-Q, Dairy Queen on Lamar Ave., Just Between Friends in Tejas Plaza and both Chamber of Commerce locations, 8 W. Plaza and 1125 Bonham St., for a copy.

This is the second year for the Hwy. 82/287 Yard Sale, and is a great way to bring tourists into town for two days of shopping. It was a great success in 2008 and organizers plan an even better experience this year.

The national weather service is predicting a weekend full of clear skies and sunshine, so come join in the fun and have a great day with friends and family searching for that perfect treasure, and take the time to get to know your neighbors along the highway.
