Paris’ Hall sits atop RRV in volleyball

Published December 15, 2009

It wasn’t another clean sweep of awards, but the Paris Lady Cats once again boasted the area’s top performer as junior middle blocker Tiara Hall was named the All-Red River Valley Most Valuable Player.

A year ago, Paris claimed all of the major awards in the area after lumbering over all other area teams.

This season featured more parity, which spread the three top awards to representatives from different schools.

Hall earned the title of MVP, while North Lamar sophomore hitter Sara Dunmon received the RRV Newcomer of the Year award and Detroit Lady Eagles head coach Jeff Allensworth was named RRV Coach of the Year.

A year after receiving First Team honors, Hall developed her skill set even further. She finished with a team-high 353 kills this season and consistently clogged the net as she had the team lead in blocks.

Her dominating performances, as well as her leadership, in each match aided the Lady Cats in finishing as the District 10-3A runners-up and an overall record of 31-9. Paris advanced to the regional quarterfinal round of the Class 3A playoffs before falling to Prosper.

“Not only did she lead in kills, but she also was a leader on the floor,” Paris head coach Melanie Hodges said. “She wasn’t always the one that necessarily led with her voice, but her presence on the floor with her hitting and blocking were important. She was a leader in that sense.”

Paris’ crosstown rival, North Lamar, fell shy of a playoff berth but battled from a 2-5 start in district to finish the district slate at 5-5 and an overall record of 21-18. Dunmon was a pleasant surprise for the Pantherettes. She joined the team just before district play began and finished the 10-match stretch with a team-high 87 kills and had 171 kills for the season.

“It was kind of funny the way it worked out,” North Lamar head coach Jimmy Fendley said. “We had a couple of players who coudn’t go to the Prosper tournament (Aug. 20), so I called her and asked her if she could go be a back-up in case I needed her. She came in during the second game of the first match. I put her on the floor then and she hasn’t come off since then...She’s a good kid who works hard.”

Allensworth earned Coach of the Year honors after leading the Lady Eagles to an overall record of 33-4 and a trip to the Class A, Region III tournament. They fell to Normangee in the regional semifinal, which marked the school’s best season in its history.

A couple of Hall’s teammates at Paris, sophomore hitter Andi Bawcum and junior setter Caroline Chappell, were named to the All-RRV first team.

A pair of Dunmon’s teammates at North Lamar, senior setter Rainey Smith and junior Cobi Barker, were first teamers this season.

Detroit junior hitter Brianna Williams and senior setter Brooke Griffin were also named to the first team.

Prairiland, the District 12-2A champion, was represented on the first team by senior Taylor Skidmore and senior Kelti Mowery.

Chisum senior middle blocker Shelbie Monkres rounded out the first team.
