Prairiland remains flawless, ready for Pewitt

PATTONVILLE — The Prairiland Patriots sputtered in the first quarter Friday night but came alive later in the game to overcome a hard-hitting Hooks team 32-13, maintaining a perfect season going into a district finale away from home against undefeated Paul Pewitt on Nov. 6.
Running back Randal Sessums fumbled twice in the first minutes of Friday’s contest and the Hooks Hornets capitalized on one of the Sessums miscues to take a 7-0 lead less than five minutes in to the first stanza. But Sessums redeemed himself later in the game with 220 yards rushing on 29 carries and one touchdown.
Both teams suffered setbacks at crucial times — Prairiland with the two fumbles and six penalties and Hooks with an interception on its 45-yard line and 11 penalties, including two players ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Patriot defense held the Hornet offense to 182 yards — 73 on the ground and 109 in the air — and the Prairiland offense put together 329 yards rushing. But the Hornets shut down the Patriot passing game to 17 yards. Prairiland accumulated 356 offensive yards on 69 plays with 14 first downs.
Prairiland head coach Glen Schuelke said turnovers and penalties hurt the Patriots, especially in the first quarter.
“We were behind 7-0 and we should have been ahead 14-0,” Schuelke said. “We were ahead 16 at the half and we should have been 30.”
But Schuelke said his team played well with the defensive front “overall dominating the game, allowing only 73 yards rushing.”
“And we still ran 329 yards,” Schuelke said. “Most teams would take that. Bad things happened early but we still played well when we needed to.”
Schuelke gave credit to the Hornets for being athletic.
“They have kids that run and play well and it’s always been a good game,” Schuelke said. In 2008, the score was tied in the fourth quarter, with Prairiland scoring twice late in the game to take home a 20-8 victory.
The Hornets struck first Friday night with less than five minutes in to the game on a 65-yard pass play for 6. The PAT failed.
The Patriots drove deep into Hornet territory twice in the first quarter but were denied both times. But in the second quarter quarterback Payne Schuelke broke free for a 14-yard run on fourth and nine and Sessums toted the ball for 10 yards to paydirt followed by a Tanner Connot two-point conversion to take the lead away from the Hornets 8-7.
Four minutes later, Schuelke intercepted a Hornet pass at the 45 followed by a Sessums 37-yard run on a fourth down play. Schuelke scored from 10 yards out on a keeper. Sessums ran for the extra two, making the score 16-7 at halftime.
Both teams scored in the fourth quarter. Tanner Connot returned a punt 30 yards to the Hornet 29 followed by a 25-yard Sessums blast. Sessums would pick up three more yards before Schuelke scored from the one. Connot ran a conversion, making it 24-7 with 9:13 remaining in the game.
Hooks answered less than a minute later for six. Connot returned the kick off 35 yards to the Prairiland 47. Sessums carried the ball down field before Josh Esch broke loose on a 20-yard run for six with 5:53 remaining. Connot converted for two, ending the scoring for the night.
