DETROIT The Detroit Independent School District begins the school year Monday with a new elementary school and a new superintendent. Steve Drummond, 34, was named first as interim superintendent following the June resignation of former Superintendent Morris Lyon.
Drummond, who has been with the district the past three years as high school assistant principal and coach, is to preside during an elementary school ribbon cutting ceremonies today at 5 p.m.
The new superintendent graduated salutatorian at North Hopkins High School in 1983 and in 1987 received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M Commerce.
He returned in 2002 to receive a Masters in Education Administration along with principal certification followed by superintendent certification in 2003.
He was employed 19 years at North Hopkins ISD as science teacher, coach and high school principal.
I have really enjoyed my time with Detroit ISD, Drummond said. The school is the central focus of our town and is involved in most community functions here.
We are blessed with top notch facilities including a brand new elementary school. I am really excited about this opportunity and plan to move forward with the progress we have made in the past few years.
Drummond said the school board, teachers, staff, students and community members have a strong love for the school.
I hope to provide leadership for the district for many years to come, Drummond said.
