Take a Holly Jolly tour

Published December 8, 2009

For those who missed out on the Holly Jolly Trolley historic tour this past weekend, this special feature of Holiday in Paris returns Saturday.

For $5 per ticket, riders will be taken on a tour of 22 locations that feature prominently in the history of Paris. Along the way, tour guides add colorful stories of why those locations are so important to the town, bringing local history to life in a unique atmosphere.

The trolley leaves the corner of Clarksville and Main Street at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and takes approximately 45 minutes. Conductors and ticket takers are Laura Carrington and John Brazille. The trolley has seating for 30 people. Advance tickets are sold at the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce downtown office at 8 West Plaza or at the first stop.

“The guides for the trolley tours have a lot of knowledge about Paris. These tours should be excellent,” said Ann Gilliland, volunteer coordinator for Holiday in Paris.

Guides for Saturday’s tours are Marvin Gorley, Elbert Dewmond and Louise Hagood on the 11 a.m. tour; Barbara Kohls and Louise Hagood at the 1:30 p.m. tour; and Pat and Glen Books for the 3 p.m. tour.

Stops along the route include: Paris Plaza, Lamar County Courthouse, St. Paul Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Methodist Church/Gibbons High Schoolsite, Olive Branch Baptist Church/Maxey Funeral Home, Guest’s Corner, Atkinson-Morris residence/Fitzhugh Street, Crockett Circle, Paris Junior College, Love Civic Center/Eiffel Tower, Evergreen Cemetery, South Main Depot/1916 fire origin, Church Street, Maxey House, Wise House, Lamar County Hospital, Chisum grave, Pinhook/Chisum home place, Union Station, Daniel Home/First Presbyterian Church, Culbertson house, Bywaters Park, Starrett Funeral Home and City Hall/McDonald building.

The trolley rides provide an insight into the history of Paris for visitors, or anyone who wants to learn a little more about the town they live in. This is the second year the Holly Jolly Trolley historic tours have been a featured part of Holiday in Paris.

The historic tours are just one aspect of dozens of activities and events that comprise Holiday in Paris, which gears up for one more weekend, Friday through Sunday. Visit holidayinparistexas.com for a complete schedule of events.
