BOGATA — In his first game on the varsity level, Rivercrest junior quarterback Brady Kennedy made quite an impression.
Kennedy, who replaces Terrance Cannon at the quarterback position this season, accounted for 272 total yards for the Rebels in their season-opening 30-6 victory over the Alba-Golden Panthers Friday night.
Kennedy led a Rivercrest (1-0) offensive attack that featured 344 yards of total offense in the victory over Alba-Golden (0-1).
“We’re thrilled to get the win,” Rivercrest head coach Terry Anderson said. “But I’m not happy with the way we played. We had our moments for a while, but it was kind of like a roller coaster.”
The majority of the first quarter was sort of a feeling-out process for the Rebels. They fumbled three consecutive snaps during one stretch of the quarter.
But the homestanding Rivercrest squad finally gelled late in the opening stanza as Kennedy opened the game’s scoring with a 26-yard rushing touchdown.
“Everything that could’ve gone wrong did,” Anderson said of the team’s first-quarter blues. “It just wasn’t very good. Finally, toward the end of the first quarter we settled down and scored like we should’ve the whole first quarter.”
The Rebels kept their momentum going during the second quarter. Kennedy rushed for two more touchdowns during the quarter, of the six-yard and 21-yard variety.
Garret Anderson also tacked on a 23-yard field goal during the second quarter, and the Rebels entered halftime with a 30-6 lead.
It was more of the same for much of the second half, as Rivercrest’s defense continued to play well. Running back Jordan White scored the final Rebel touchdown of the game on a 37-yard scamper.
Alba-Golden’s lone touchdown of the game was an 80-yard run in the fourth quarter, which accounted for almost half the Panthers’ total offense in the game.
Rivercrest defeated Alba-Golden to begin the 2008 season as well. The key for the Rebels will be to build on this win and not to fall into an eight-game losing skid like they did a season ago.
“Everything we did wrong is correctable,” Anderson said. “We feel good about the win, and we feel good we have a lot of kids playing hard.”
Rivercrest travels to face James Bowie at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
