P'land wallops North Forney in 67-0 shutout

Published August 30, 2009

PATTONVILLE — The Prairiland Patriots could do no wrong in a 67-0 shut out Friday night in the season opener against the North Forney Falcons.

But the win came with a price. Senior quarterback and safety Payne Schuelke dislocated a shoulder shortly before halftime. Prairiland head coach Glen Schuelke said Saturday he expects Payne to be out of action for three-to-four weeks. In the meantime, Tanner Connot and Zach McLamore are expected to assume the role of quarterback.

Although Prairiland fans relished the shutout Friday, Coach Schuelke was less exuberant.

“I hate beating people like that, but they just kept passing and you can’t just keep doing that,” Schuelke said. “But everybody got to play tonight and that is good.”

The coach talked briefly about his son’s injury.

“We’ll survive,” Schuelke said. “It’s just hard when it’s your own kid. I don’t think he will be out but two or three weeks. He’ll be back by district.”

Schuelke praised his team’s execution.

“They played well; we didn’t have many penalties,” the coach said. “Overall, that was a good first game and I am very pleased with the way the kids played.”

Running back Randal Sessums scored first for the Patriots on a five-yard run five minutes into the first quarter. It was Prairiland’s second goal line penetration following a Schuelke touchdown called back on a holding penalty. The Patriots converted for two on a Schuelke keeper.

A pass from Schuelke to receiver Connot from the six with 4:39 on the clock brought the score to 14 followed by a Schuelke keeper two-point conversion. Less than a minute later, defensive back Justin Harris intercepted and scampered 30 yards to the Falcon 37. Three plays later, Schuelke found McLamore on a 24-yard pass for another six points with 2:34 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Prairiland continued to roll. Sessums recovered a fumble with 1:24 remaining followed by a Schuelke to Connot 33-yard completion to add six with less than a minute remaining, making the score 28-0 at the end of the first stanza.

Another Schuelke-to-Connot completion added six more points less than a minute into the second quarter. The Falcons ran an unsuccessful series and were forced to punt from their 16-yard line. Schuelke ran several keepers to bring the Patriots into scoring range and then took it in from the 19-yard line to make the score 40-0. McLamore added the extra point.

North Forney would respond with a couple of first downs before the Patriot defense again shut their opponents down. The Patriots took over with 2:25 on the clock. Schuelke went down as he was scrambling on a third-down play with 59 seconds remaining in the half. McLamore would guide the Patriots the remainder of the game.

Six minutes into the second half, Sessums scored six after back-to-back carries on a march down the field. The extra point brought the score to 48 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Josh Esch scored six on a 25-yard run and McLamore added the extra point to make the score 55-0. McLamore scored again on a goal-line quarterback sneak with 8:39 remaining in the game push the score to 61-0. Two minutes later the Patriots found pay dirt again on an Esch 30-yard run. The extra point failed, ending the game at 67-0.

Jay McKinney led the Patriots with nine tackles. Connot had eight tackles. Graham, Esch and Ryley Johnson had six apiece.

Looking forward to next week’s home game against Collinsville, Schuelke had this to say about the Collinsville team:

“They are used to winning, and it won’t be like this.”
