HOOKS — The Clarksville Blue Tigers’ hopes of re-entering the District 12-2A playoff picture ended on Friday night in Hooks when the Hornets shook off a 12-0 deficit late in the second quarter to respond by scoring the final 27 points of the ballgame.
The Hornets moved on to sting the Blue Tigers, 27-12.
The Hornets’ plan was obviously to run the football. In fact, the Hornets used 58 rushing plays to pick up 297 yards on the ground. The Hooks attack was led by freshman running back Demetris Burchette who pounded his way through the Tigers’ defense for 209 yards on 36 carries.
Hooks, now 4-1 in league play, can finish no lower in the standings than in a third-place tie. The Hornets now stand at 4-4 for the year.
Clarksville lost for the third straight time in league play, as Dewaski Davis’ team now owns a 1-4 district record with games remaining against Paul Pewitt and DeKalb. The Tigers are 3-5 overall.
Clarksville forced three turnovers in the game against the Hornets and the Blue Tigers didn’t turn the football over for the first time this season. Davis’ team also seemed to be in control of the contest throughout the first half, as the Tigers didn’t allow the Hornets to score until just one tick remained in the half. The tally was a 31-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Aaron Doddy to receiver Damonte Baty. The pass was actually deflected by Clarksville defenders on the Tigers’ 5-yard line, but Baty pulled in the deflection then moved across the goal line. The score drew Hooks to within 12-6 at the intermission as the extra point kick was no good.
Clarksville took control of the game early, using the opening drive of the contest to score with running back Quan Bell finding paydirt on a 10-yard run around the left end with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter. Radonte Edward’s extra point attempt failed, leaving Clarksville ahead 6-0.
The lead grew to 12-0 when Clarksville defensive back H.B. Rosser took a Hornet fumble down the right sideline 65 yards for a touchdown with 3:02 left in the first half. The conversion run failed, but the Blue Tigers held a 12-0 advantage.
But it was the score by Baty that ended the point production in the initial half that handed the homestanding Hornets all the momentum that would be needed to rally for the victory.
Clarksville opened the second half with Rosser intercepting Doddy on the Hooks 44-yard-line, then racing down to the Hornets 15-yard line.
The Tigers would then pass on all four downs with only the final pass being completed to running back Radonte Edwards and that was for a seven-yard loss as the ball was turned over to Hooks on downs.
But Clarksville managed to stop Hooks on the Hornets’ next possession as defensive end Jarrion Roberts sacked Doddy on the Clarksville 29 on a fourth-down play, which started on the Tigers’ 18-yard line.
The Hornets gained the advantage for good following a Clarksville punt on the Tigers’ possession. With the Hornets taking over on their own 17-yard line, it took just two plays to produce the go-ahead touchdown as back Damarcus Dickerson zipped 45 yards for the score with 1:48 left in the third quarter. Baty proceeded to drill the extra point kick giving Hooks a 13-12 advantage.
The Tigers moved the ball just five yards before punting on the next possession. The punt placed the Hornets in business on the Hooks 37. Behind the running of Burchette, Hooks used a time-consuming, 10-play drive to score again with Doddy sneaking across the goal line from one yard out with 7:28 left in the game. Baty again nailed the extra point kick increasing the lead to 20-13.
Hooks added the final touchdown on the next possession, as Baty snatched a Burchette fumble in mid-air, then raced into the endzone from 18 yards out with 2:09 left. He then converted his extra point kick. The scoring play originated from the Tigers 32 yard line.
Clarksville produced just 51 yards of total offense in the game, as the Hornets shut down the Tigers’ offense in the second half. Rosser had just 23 rushing yards to lead Clarksville.

Rivercrest (2-6, 1-4) finally broke through on the scoreboard in the third quarter and added another score in the fourth quarter to account for its 12 points in the contest. One of the Rebels’ touchdowns was a rush by junior quarterback Brady Kennedy. The other was a pass from Kennedy to wide receiver Jacob Wright. Kennedy ran the ball 15 times for 59 yards. The Rivercrest leader in rushing yards was running back Jordan White, who had 19 carries for 94 yards. Kennedy completed 4 of 14 passes for 43 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
