Beavers Bend hosts annual Folk Festival

Published November 10, 2009

BROKEN BOW — The twang of banjos, the wail of the fiddles and the ring of the dulcimer strings will signal the kickoff of the 16th Annual Beavers Bend Folk Festival and Craft Show Friday through Sunday at the Forest Heritage Center in Beavers Bend State Park in Southeastern Oklahoma.

The show brings approximately 17,000 visitors to the fun and festivities just in time for fall to spread its spectacular colors across the area.

The festival is a showcase for turn-of-the-century arts and crafts, with 70 exhibitors and vendors featuring skills of every type, including candlemaking, woodturning, lye soap making, knife making and quilting.

The courtyard of the Forest Heritage Center is a haven for children.

Storytellers spin their yarns and a petting zoo offers up close and personal encounters with all types of furry creatures.

The children’s activity will offer youngsters a chance to create a puppet show with their imaginations and their own hand-made paper puppets.

Four of the country’s best folk musicians will be featured on the outdoor stage throughout the three-day event.

There will be free Mountain Dulcimer workshops in the courtyard.

Participants can bring their own dulcimers or use those provided by Keith and Darlene Vanderbosch.

Food at the festival takes a new turn this year, with pork-a-bobs, patty melts, chicken tacos, turkey legs and wrap sandwiches.

Back this year are Indian tacos cowboy tacos, burgers, corn dogs and funnel cakes.

Fresh apple cider or old fashioned root beer will be on hand to wash all the food down.

Mother nature has provided a colorful, scenic fall foliage for visitors to the area.

Activities include the nature center programs, hayrides and train rides.

The festival is sponsored by the Heritage Center Advisory Board, the Oklahoma Arts Council, the McCurtain County Tourism Authority and the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.

Festival hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Beavers Bend Resort entrance is located on Hwy 259A, seven miles north of Broken Bow.
