ROXTON — Roxton’s Lady Lions spent their first match of the 12th annual Roxton Volleyball Tournament on Thursday “ironing out kinks,” according to head coach Jessica Stidham.
The Lady Lions worked out those kinks during their second match, but stumbled in their final match of the day.
Thursday was a day of pool play for the eight teams in the tournament. Roxton, the only area team in the tournament, begins playing in the bracket portion Saturday at 11 a.m. when the squad takes on Savoy.
Each team is guaranteed to play two games Saturday.
In other matches on Saturday, Miller Grove takes on Sulphur Bluff at 8 a.m., Quinlan faces Trenton at 9 a.m. and Leonard faces North Hopkins at 10 a.m.
Roxton began Thursday’s pool play with a 13-25, 23-25 loss to Leonard. The team then rebounded with a 25-6, 25-22 victory over Trenton before falling to Miller Grove 14-25, 16-25.
“We played like we were tired in the first game,” Stidham said. “In the second game, we had some better serves.”
Stidham noted the play of sophomore hitter Kemia Franklin, Andrea Duke and Jessica Silva during Thursday’s matches.
Franklin was one of the team’s top hitters in those matches, Duke had some impressive serves in the win over Trenton and Silva had an all-around good day.
Saturday, the goal for the Lady Lions’ will be to improve some areas in which they struggled on Thursday.
“We need to work on hitting the holes better while we’re on offense,” Stidham said. “And we need to be more aggressive while serving.”
