Seth James brings the blues to Crosswire

Published September 25, 2009

He’s been called a “blues guitar playing freak of nature” with a voice reminiscent of T. Graham Brown and Bob Seger, and he’s appearing tonight at Crosswire.

Seth James’ bluesy style has become well known throughout the Texas music scene and beyond. His vocals venture from an effortless earthy rasp to smooth crooning and his Americana sound encompasses roots rock, country and a strong dose of roadhouse R&B.  James has shared the stage with artists such as Percy Sledge, Delbert McClinton, and Billy Joe Shaver.

Born in Fort Worth and raised in the ranch country of West Texas, James comes from a long line of musicians, His grandfather played piano in honky tonks and his father, a drum player, gave James his first guitar, a Gibson Southern Jumbo, and taught him to play “Sultans Of Swing” by Dire Straits. James taught himself to play by listening to Lighting Hopkins, Freddie King, and Credence Clearwater Revival. In 1996, he got his hands on his first Fender Stratocaster and discovered the raw power of the electric guitar.

His latest studio effort, “That Kind Of Man,” was released Sept. 1, to sterling reviews.

“James’ ‘That Kind of Man’ is an example of all the best elements of the current Texas music scene and he slings a killer axe on the live stage,” wrote Urban Tulsa Weekly.

“By far and without doubt ... elegantly written, brilliantly played ... soulful,”  said Texas music legend Ray Wiley Hubbard.

Fresh from an appearance at Hat Tricks in Lewisville, after playing in Paris James will head out to the Zoo Amphitheater in Oklahoma City before playing the Dallas Cowboys Tailgater Party in Arlington Monday night with Wade Bowen.

Today James, Jessica, and their 3-year-old son Charlie live near Wichita Falls, not so far in spirit or location from where he started out — just like his music.

“We get so used to music that is tuned up and polished to the point that all of the humanness gets pulled out if it,” James said. “I hope that this record gives people encouragement that there are still musicians out there making good, honest music for the sake of the songs.”

Seth James takes the stage at Crosswire, 3330 N.E. Loop 286, at 9 p.m. Friday. “That Kind of Man” is released by Underground Sound / Thirty Tigers.
