Calvary celebrates Lord’s Acre

Published November 6, 2009

Calvary United Methodist Church hosts its annual Lord’s Acre Celebration at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church.

According to Charlotte Yorkson, chairperson of the event, this year’s theme is “The Year of Extra-Ordinary Giving.”

The auction, which will be conducted by Arvy Johnson and Lee Cannedy, will be different from previous years.  Get your hedges trimmed or leaves raked, take a shopping trip to Dallas, purchase a dinner for four (or up to fifty) friends or relatives, or get help with your computer skills — these are a few of the scores of items featured at the auction.  The event benefits the many mission activities of the church.

The traditional barbeque, live auction, and bake sale will again be the featured activities, along with a performance of a short play by the Children’s Department.  All the activities are in the church’s fellowship hall and are open to the public.

The barbeque dinner is to be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and the $8 tickets may be purchased at the door.  The bake sale also begins at 5:30 p.m. and continues through the close of the auction.  The children perform at 6 p.m. and the auction begins at 6:15 p.m.

The Lord’s Acre Committee heads up the various responsibilities that are part of the celebration.  Jack Farguson is in charge of the barbeque dinner.  Denise Silvey supplies decorations, and Nancy Glaspie is head of publicity.  Heading up the auction is Mike Donnan, while Sue Smith is in charge of the bake sale.  Carol Rooks and Keith Hutchins are responsible for computing the bidders’ purchases and checking-out the persons with the winning bids.
