By Connie Beard
Published September 24, 2009
Live gospel music will fill the halls and auditorium at Love Civic Center Friday and Saturday when the Southern Gospel Music Association of Texas returns to Paris for its 37th annual convention.
The public is invited Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. for the Celebration of Gospel Music. The event has no charge; a love offering will be accepted.
More than 40 southern gospel music artists will be on hand for this event.
The weekend concerts are in celebration of SGMA of Texas’ 37th year of southern gospel music promotion and preservation in Texas. The association will hold its annual awards banquet Saturday at 2 p.m., honoring its artists in various categories including “Group of the Year,” “Musician of the Year,” “Promoter of the Year” and “Youth Vocalist of the Year.”
The SGMA was founded in 1972 by J. Howard Rogers of Paris, Calvin Wills of Arlington and others in an effort to build a solid base for gospel music. Southern gospel performance groups and soloists, songwriters, musicians, industry personnel and music ministers work together to further the association’s mission: to preserve the southern gospel tradition while advancing gospel music through events and promotion of the music and offering a connection for Texas gospel music artists and industry personnel.
Member artists of SGMA include: The Splawns of Decatur; King’s River of Fort Worth; The Huckaba Family of Irving; Earley Praises of North Richland Hills; Heaven’s Harbor of Joshua; Hendrix Trio of Texarkana; The Latimers of Burleson; Rosie O’Toole of Sherman; Faithful Touch of Mansfield; David Patillo of Texakana; The Herrins of Fort Worth; Friends by Grace of Dallas; Homer Belcher of Denton; CanaanBound of Denison; Heather Griffin of Mansfeld; and Hines Family Band of Deport.
Others include The Gibbs Family of Eastland; Blood Bought of Bowie; Gospel Sounds of Burleson; His Call of Mesquite; Spoken For of Richardson; Marvin Stewart, Jr. of Arlington; The Boltons of Paris; Crossroads of Dallas; Psalm 100 of Sulphur Springs; The Gastineaus of Ada, Okla,; Brand New of Glenn Heights; Best Family of Mineral Wells; Southern Charm of Alvarado; Cooper Family of Paris; Mark Sargent of Burleson; Master’s Touch of Grand Prairie; Cross Creek of Sumner; Ransomed of Mesquite; Silverwings of Boyd; Brenda North of Burleson; Lee Gann Quartet of Fort Worth; Master’s Quartet of Midlothian; and more.
The annual two-day Celebration of Gospel Music moves to various Texas cities each year. The organization also presents a Spring Festival and Fall Festival of Gospel Music as performance opportunities for member performers. Bi-monthly meetings are held in addition to educational workshops presenting information on songwriting, vocal and stage performance, recording and varied topics; as well as networking opportunities for members.
