Educated workforce is the key

Published December 14, 2009

Nothing is more important to the Paris economy than an educated workforce.

Civic leaders realized the truism years ago and acted on its importance in the early 90s with the formation of the Lamar County Coalition of Education, Business and Industry. The Coalition brought together school officials from the county’s five school districts, along with business leaders and the involvement of both large and small industries.

Since that time, we have witnessed a united effort to better prepare students beginning as early as junior high school for post secondary education at a community college, university or technical school. And in some instances, students have graduated high school ready to take their places in the workforce. But the effort to prepare local students for jobs within the community must continue if Paris is to retain the many talented students our school districts produce year after year. Otherwise, these students must seek jobs elsewhere.

The recent donation by the Kimberly- Clark Corporation of equipment to enable the Electromechanical Technology Department at Paris Junior College to expand its training on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) is an example of the ongoing effort to train a workforce. The components, valued at approximately $7,000 will allow “Remote I/O” (remote input and output modules) to be added to the existing PLC equipment.

In expressing appreciation to Kimberly-Clark for the donation, Dr. Pamela Anglin, president of Paris Junior College, emphasized the importance of the donation — and ultimately the mission of the Coalition of Education, Business and Industry.

“We are so appreciative of this donation,” said Anglin said. “It demonstrates the partnership we have with Kimberly-Clark in keeping current with technology. That in turn assists PJC in providing the skilled work force Lamar County needs to continue growing.”
