Shelby Wilson nailed a last-second three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the North Lamar Pantherettes to a thrilling 45-43 win over Gunter and move Pantherette coach Sheila Daughtrey one win away from No. 500.
North Lamar trailed by 10 at halftime, and was down by one with 11 seconds to go. Gunter turned the ball over on an inbounds pass attempt and Wilson took the steal, and launched a three with about five seconds showing on the clock that hit nothing but net.
“I give the girls a lot of credit for fighting back in this one. They were playing against a very tough defense. Gunter is a very skilled team,” said Daughtrey, whose record now stands at 499-212 after her team’s fifth straight win to start the season.
Daughtrey can get win No. 500 on Monday when the Pantherettes travel to Hugo, Okla., to take on the Lady Buffaloes.
Wilson led the Pantherettes with 18 points, while Snowy White added seven. Nichole Perry and Samantha Flippen each scored six.
Gunter’s Jamie Bailey scored a game-high 29 points.
North Lamar trailed 13-10 after one quarter and was down 26-16 at halftime. The Pantherettes outscored Gunter 15-10 in the third quarter and were down by five points, 36-31, entering the fourth. Until Wilson’s three, North Lamar had scored just one point in the final stanza.
The Pantherette junior varsity defeated Gunter 31-26. Lauren Arnold led the way with 12 points, while Sarah Dunmon added five.
