Area basketball teams triumphant in tourneys

CAMPBELL — Four Honey Grove Lady Warrior players notched double-digit point totals to aid the team in a 73-14 rout of the Trenton Lady Tigers during the first round of the Campbell Basketball Tournament on Thursday.

Chanda Foster was the leading scorer with 15 points. Deosha Mackey added 12 points. Jessica Brigham and Chelsea Edwards chipped in 10 points apiece. Foster, Mackey, Regan Rickman and Callie Ashley had six rebounds apiece.

Honey Grove leaped to a 20-1 advantage in the opening frame and never looked back en route to the convincing victory.

The Lady Warriors are scheduled to compete in the tournament again today and Saturday.

Rivercrest 59, Sulphur Bluff 32 (G)

SALTILLO — The Rivercrest Lady Rebels began the Saltillo Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday by picking up their first victory of the season. They downed the Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears, 59-32.

Rivercrest (1-2) finished each quarter with a double-digit point total while limiting Sulphur Bluff to nine points or less in each quarter.

Freshman Channen Martin was the top scorer in a balanced scoring effort, as she totaled 11 points. Haley Steen had her second straight double-double performance with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Walesiak had nine points and eight assists.

The Lady Rebels are scheduled to continue the tournament today with a 4 p.m. showdown against the Roxton Lady Lions.

Roxton 67, Avery 36 (G)

SALTILLO — The Roxton Lady Lions performed well in all facets of the game and came away with a 67-36 triumph over the Avery Lady Bulldogs in the first round of the Saltillo Invitational Basketball Tournament on Thursday.

Roxton (3-0) held a 30-18 lead over Avery at intermission and went on to limit the Lady Bulldogs to 18 points in the second half while scoring 36 of its own.

Kemia Franklin scored 24 points for the Lady Lions, including five 3-pointers, and had six steals. Chelsea Hinton and Erica Savage chipped in with 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

Keylee Clemmons and Andie Duke had seven rebounds apiece for Roxton.

Roxton is scheduled to continue the tournament today with a showdown against Rivercrest.

Eagles down Commerce JV

CAMPBELL — The Detroit Eagles defeated the Commerce Tiger junior varsity team Thursday in the first round of the Campbell Basketball Tournament, 81-26.

Detroit (2-0) held a 23-8 lead after the first quarter and held on to claim the win.

Deon Patt had a game-high 24 points. Kolton Jaynes had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kameron Cashion had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Eddins had 10 points and five steals. Challen Marshall had 12 points off the bench.
