Paris received $15,890 in charitable bingo allocations from the state for the third quarter of 2009. Statewide, 136 cities and countries received a total of $2.9 million, with an allocation of $3.2 million sent to the state’s General Revenue Fund.
Allocations are the result of prize fees collected from players who won bingo prizes in July, August and September in games conducted by non-profit organizations. As required by law, five percent of a prize awarded is withheld from the winner and deposited in a non-dedicated account in the General Revenue Fund.
Cities and counties which imposed the gross receipt tax on a local-option basis on or before Jan. 1, 1993, receive quarterly payments of up to 2.5 percent of the prizes won by bingo players in their jurisdictions.
The largest single allocation of $206,008 was received by Bexar County. The remaining top counties are Harris at $148,011, Tarrant at $141,541, Dallas at $140,345 and Bell at $118,566.
Among the top five municipalities, the City of San Antonio received the highest allocation at $199,461, followed by Fort Worth at $76,191, Corpus Christi with $69,053, Lubbock at $68,719 and Austin with $63,727.
There are 1,125 non-profits which conduct charitable bingo games in the state. There are seven charitable organizations in Paris, conducting games at two sites. Flamingo Bingo at 1231 N. Main St., hosts Paris Teen League Baseball Association, Brookston Volunteer Fire Department, Lollypop Learning Center and Police Athletic League of Paris. Big Time Bingo, 1875 Fitzhugh Ave., hosts Red River Valley Fair Association, Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department and American Legion Post 199.
