Most of the municipal entities in Lamar County are still ahead on sales tax collection compared to the rest of the state, a recent report from Texas Comptroller Susan Combs indicates.
Combs sent Texas cities $341.6 million in sales tax allocations, down 8.3 percent compared to November 2008. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations statewide are down 4.2 percent compared to the same period last year.
Not so for Paris and Lamar County, which so far this year showed a 9.47 percent gain and an 8.48 percent gain respectively.
However, other Lamar County entities are on the deficit side along with the majority of state entities. Blossom showed a 17.12 percent decrease compared to the first nine months of 2008. Roxton was down 7.05 percent; Toco down 15.97 percent; Reno down 3.63 percent and Deport down 7.73 percent.
The City of Paris collected $672,020.63 in November, based on sales made in September. That was almost a 1 percent increase compared with the $665,820.73 check collected in November 2008. Sun Valley showed a 52.11 percent decrease in its November reimbursement check, down to $2,399.64 from the $5,011.27 check in November 2008. Toco showed a greater loss, down 62.43 percent from the $4,422.37 November 2008 check to the $1,661.45 the municipality received this November.
Residents in the City of Paris approved beer and alcohol sales early in the year, which could be a reason for sales losses in Toco and Sun Valley.

In a released statement, Comptroller Combs said declining sales tax collections, which began in February, have continued with October’s collections.
“Tax collections are down in major sectors of the economy, including retail trade, oil and natural gas and construction,” Combs said.
