Reno set to raise water rates

Published November 10, 2009

RENO – Residents here will see an increase of 18 cents per thousand gallons tacked on to their water bill starting in December.

Lamar County increased its rates from $3.125 to $3.305 per thousand gallons, said Reno Mayor Buddy Heuberger, leading to an increase for Reno citizens.

“If we increase by that 18 cents, it will make our rate go from $14.55 for the first thousand gallons to $14.73,” Heuberger said.

Currently customers pay $4.72 for each additional thousand gallons, and that will increase to $4.90.

For residents outside the city limits, the 18 cents will double, he said.

The total increase to Reno residents is 5.76 percent.

“I hate to go up on the water rates because I feel like they are high enough, but we don’t have another choice,” Heuberger said.

The 18-cent increase, he said, should cover the city’s costs and leave the budget unaffected.

The council agreed to the increase, but the motion is pending ratification at a Monday meeting due to a typographical error in the agenda item.

Three resolutions in support of grant applications also were agreed to by the council.

One resolution pertained to a Texas Department of Transportation grant for the Rails to Trails project making its way through Reno. A second resolution pertained to an application for a 2009 Homeland Security Grant Program with up to $150,000 in funds available. The third resolution supported all Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The University of Texas at Arlington has agreed to do an economic development survey for the City of Reno, Councilman Jerry McFadden said. He also chairs the Reno Economic Development Committee.

The committee researched similar services at other colleges, and with UTA offering to defray some of their costs through the college, its services would fit into the city’s $5,000 survey budget.

In other business the council:

• Agreed to accept nominations for the replacement of a member of the Reno Economic Development Committee who recently resigned;

• approved a project with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in the amount of $9,612;

• named The Paris News as the official newspaper of the City of Reno; and

• agreed to go out for bids to repair curbs and gutters for Town East and look in to replacing culverts at Pine Mill Road.
