Richard John Martinez II, 20, of Paris was killed early Sunday morning while walking in the outer southbound lane of U.S. 271 near Arthur City, according to Texas Department of Public Safety reports.
Martinez was struck by a 98 Cadillac Deville driven by Kevin Wallace of Hugo, Okla.
The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Dallas medical examiners office for an autopsy, according to a report by DPS trooper James Blount.
His report states the Cadillac was southbound from Arthur City in the outside lane of traffic and the pedestrian was walking southbound in the same lane of traffic.
“The driver did not see the pedestrian,” DPS communications operator Lyrae Reece from the Sulphur Springs Department of Public Safety office said earlier today. “The pedestrian was struck by the vehicle in the outside lane of traffic.”
Both southbound lanes of U.S. 271 were closed for a period of time, according to Sgt. James Kain of the Paris DPS office. Traffic was detoured around the scene on Farm Roads 197 and 906.
