Dragons open season with 94-50 home win

Published November 4, 2009

Desmond King poured in a game-high 25 points and pulled down 12 boards as Paris Junior College crushed the Eastern Oklahoma Mountaineers, 94-50, Tuesday night at the Hunt Center in Tom Schuberth’s PJC coaching debut.

“I think we had a few butterflies and we didn’t shoot great but we kept finding a way to add to the lead early,” Schuberth said. “I was pleased with our patience and then the shots starting falling. (Desmond) King was the key to us winning. He got a lot of second and third rebounds and did an excellent job running the floor.”

Bryce Cartwright recorded 17 points, including three treys, for the Dragons and Calvin Brown tossed in 14 points. PJC had nine different players get into the scoring column.

PJC (1-0) squandered a seven-point lead around the 7:52 mark of the first half as Eastern Oklahoma (0-1) capped off an 8-0 run to claim the lead at 21-20 for the first time.

However, the Dragons reeled off nine of the next 11 points to pull away for good. King accounted for six points and Terrance Bowman dropped a 3-pointer.

PJC went on another 8-0 run to send the lead into double digits with two minutes remaining in the half. It was King leading the charge and Generra Varmall sinking a trey.

The lead increased to 14 points in the final minute of the half, as King converted a steal into a dunk and Reshaun Claiborne hooked up with King for another score. It gave King 22 points at the intermission, with PJC holding a 41-30 advantage.

PJC tallied the first 13 points of the second half, turning the contest into a rout by the 16:11 mark. Justynn Hammond was responsible, knocking down four treys as the Dragons cruised from there.

Jurmain McDonald and Mike Soap each had 12 points for the Mountaineers.

PJC returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when it hosts the Oklahoma Baptist junior varsity at the Hunt Center.

“I was expecting us to win because our guys were ready to play and excited about playing,” Schuberth said.
